Does TIME MACHINE exclusively take over an external HD?

I jut bought a new external HD. As soon as I plugged it my Mac wanted to know if this is where Time Machine should back things up. I said yes. It changed the icon of the HD on my desktop and continued to back up my files.

My question is this, when it is done backing up will I still be able to just drop files (new files I create) onto the external HD and use the remaining space or did Time Machine sort of hi-jack it for itself and it's now off limits??

No, it's not exclusive. It creates its own self-contained folder.

No. You can still drop files on there. (I do it all the time.)
