Slightly off topic but I figured I'd put this here.

I got my new 5S today and I went for my daily run. I brought a ziplock bag to put the phone in if it rained. It turns out that TouchID also works through a ziplock bag.

I knew you could use the screen through the bag, but I was surprised the fingerprint sensor also worked fine like that.

(and it did rain if you wondering)

I searched but couldn't find an answer to this question.

Apparently the Atrix's scanner didn't work in the dark, so just wondering if the 5s' does.

Sorry to ressurrect this thread four years later, but this was the first result in a google search and I wanna share my experience with the iPhone 7. I just spent a fruitless 15 minutes attempting to register a second thumbprint for touchID on my new 7 in the dark from bed, and absolutely nothing I tried would work. I even tried holding it up to a mirror to give it some ambient light, and while I got a bit further, it still it told me “TouchID setup failed, try another finger.” No other finger worked either, so I finally got up and went into a lit room, and lo and behold, I was able to add any finger I wanted easily.

I don’t know about the 5s (I had one but never tried this in the dark), but I can say with some certainty that ambient light affects the fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 7.
