Should I do it at 3 AM just to be safe?

I am using an iPhone X right now running 11.4.1

During part of the time, yes, It has to install and reboot, after all.

Well dang. I guess I’ll just have to wait until tonight to do it.

I was hoping Apple could save the iMessage for me then send it when I’m back online

It does save. The messages don't disappear. They just download when your phone is back online.

@dazlicous

But what I’m saying though is what happens when you do a iOS 12 install.

It’s gonna take the iOS 11 completely off and what not.

I think this is more involved than just turning my iPhone off or like putting it in airplane mode.

It’s updating your device. You aren’t losing anything. Once updated your phone is back to normal with a new OS. Messages will appear just fine.

Common sense would dictate that you'll get your messages once your phone comes back up, so we are talking minutes here.

I’m not saying you’ll LOSE the messages. I know they should still be there.

My worry is what if you GET an iMessage like someone sends you one while it’s updating and bc you’re updating you don’t get it.

That’s why I might just do it at 3AM

What makes you think it still won’t go through? After the update is complete anything that was sent during the update will go through once it is finished.

Troll?

This is no different than your phone being off. The messages are in the air up there somewhere (points into the air)

The bigger question is how serious are these iMessages you may miss? I want to be added to the thread. It sounds very important and I don't have much going on today.

When your phone is updating, the phone is only updating and not receiving any calls nor messages. When your phone is done updating and restores cellular connection, that is when it will receive any pending messages.

Billions of people with phones updating and any given time are not worried about not receiving messages during software updates.

If your phone is off, rebooting, or in Airplane mode you won't see your iMessage.
One it registers with your cell provider they will start coming through.
UNLESS its PCH telling you that you're the new Prize Patrol Winner, pick up, Pick Up, PICK UP !!!

Think about it, if this was an issue, there would be literally millions of complaints about lost messages every update. It would be message-gate.

I must know what is in these messages that we cannot miss. This is the most fascinating thread I've seen all day.

What if someone is trying to reach you at 3:00am? You should probably never update your phone again.
It's not safe.
