I ran out of ports with iMac so I went and bought a USB hub thinking that I can plug my ipad mini into that and then have the hub plug into my computer. It didn't work. My first thought is maybe the hub isn't powered so I went and bought another usb hub this time a powered usb hub. Came home and tried it, same problem. The top of the mac mini status bar says "Not charging". What's going on? Is there a specific type of hub I need to get?

The iPad and iPad Mini have 3 options. Charging, Not Charging, and ___.

Charging - Charging at Full Speed
Not Charging - Connected to Standard USB Port. Will Charge, just takes longer.
___ - Not connected to a charger of any kind or support.

You can find hubs with the requires amperage for the iPad, but they are often expensive.

Thanks, can you please point me to an example of these hubs?

Thank you, will it sync via those charge ports?

Yes. The ports just add the extra 700mA required for full charge speed. If your iMac does have USB 3.0, I would look into the previous suggestion though, as whenever you can, you should go to 3.0.
