I wonder if I can wake up my Mac from another part of my network. In this support article Apple says I need a wireless device from Apple: Airport. But AFAIK Airport devices aren't made anymore?
 
I am not sure about a WIFI client able to WOL but u can test it locally first, you may have to go into the WIFI NIC and manually enable it, having such an option is your first good sign.

Then I remember doing this across the Internet, basically I added a rule to my local firewall, "if you see this incoming signal, send WOL command to this client."

yes it works. even helper apps in app store to send the magic packets

wireless or wired shouldnt matter the packet is magic
 
I think it is more like Mac never sleep LOL

Since my first M-series purchase, I've noticed that Mac's these days just don't really sleep anymore.
