yes, I have a white iphone.

I'm looking at it and it has a tiny black edge around the screen...I don't see any "gray" shadow. There is always a black edge as I'm juggling around my music, game, main windows, etc.

edit: I think I know what you mean now...I can barely see that gray line... if I turn everything off...i can barely see the gray line as well..off or on.

it doesn't bother me at all...didn't even notice until you told me about it.

Oh no no, sir or miss ... really, my concern is not about it being look cheap and scared about people will look at me differently and change my life forever, OMG it's just a phone, right?

It's more like self satisfaction, I love white, I adore it .. or in this case I really want and try to adore it .. but tell me, you own a white iPhone too? Can you notice the gray shadow around display area I concerned about?

That's the problem which makes me think white iPhone is kinda translucent and so "cheap"

When I'm indoors I can definitely see the border underneath the paint. It doesn't jump out or anything, but yes, it's noticeable. On the other hand, when I'm outdoors I don't see it at all. Just solid, magical white.

Yes .. that's it .. that's what I meant, thank you :) .. well that's why I think the white layer underneath that glass is just too thin. :(

Sure it's just a bit about appearance, but if only Apple could make it solid white like we see in the official picture, right?

I never noticed the grey around my white 4s screen, nor the black border until this thread. Haha... I think the white is gorgeous!

Thank you all for confirming this issue, depends on how demanding you are, it becomes quite a problem. :D

Apple should've design the paint to be thicker and more solid. Well I think I'm going to reconsider about the decision of the iPhone color I'd choose later.

Here's my take on the subject:

I have the black one & I bought white for my wife.

Personally, I don't care for white. Yet that said, I am really impressed with the great job Apple has done with the white iPhone 4S. It's just beautiful.

I honestly believe you'd love it.

I'd try and not be too picky since nothing is perfect. I'm as picky as anyone, but I remind myself of that fact.

You like white far too much to buy a black phone. I'm sure, if you buy white and ease up a bit on expectations, you'll be so glad you did.

Off topic:

My Compliments for a great choice of user names, an even better signature, and your courtesy.

Cheers... :)

I can barely see it now that you've mentioned it. But I had never noticed it before and it's not nearly as bad as the photo in the first post. If you haven't already, go look at one in the store.

Before I bought mine I had an irrational fear that the white would become yellow-ish over time. I bought a white iPad and it immediately put those fears to rest. The white phone actually looks much cleaner, with the exception of the black screen it doesn't show fingerprints, oils, etc. like the black does.

I love my white phone and if you think that's what you want then get it!

I couldn't agree more. I bought a white iPad for my wife. I brought it home, liked it so much under normal lighting, as opposed to the bright fluorescents in the store, that the next day I went back & bought a white one for myself.

In the case of the iPad it's even a greater improvement over black.

OP if you still want opinions here's mine.

Got the white 4 and loved it at first. But then I noticed the same thing you're asking about. It depends on the light, but definitely there's a shadow around the edge.

That plus the home button always looked dirty and the edge of the phone was always picking stuff up.

With the 4S I went black and don't regret it one bit.

Edit: Forgot to mention the proximity sensor was just a complete eyesore on the white one. I know there wasn't much Apple could have done about it, but man it was ugly.

White is fine... No problems! Only reason I'd get black is if I wanted to use the black CandyShell

The black and white iPhones are identical other than the color of the paint. The white phone is beautiful, and doesn't show messy fingerprints all over it like the black. I have a white iPad and iPhone and couldn't be happier with my choice. It sounds to me as though the OP is being too OCD about the color, I feel sorry for whomever they are in a relationship with if such insignificant details are such an issue.

Its too bad Steve was emotionally attached to the old style mechanical home button. It's out of place on a touch screen phone.

I got used to it from having every iPhone since the beginning. No problems till Antennagate 4, then I had three phones fail with stuck home buttons. I still have my 3GS & others, with far more usage & no problems.

Then I got into Androids. The touch sensitive buttons are really nice. They look better, have nice alumination, and fit the image of a modern phone. Even the engineers at Apple wanted the entire front of the phone to be like Androids but Steve loved his mechanical button. He was too old and set in his ways.

I have a black 4S, my wife has a white one. The problem with the white one is the glass. There is no good white glass that can replicate the density of white plastic. Thus, the phone feels like transparent glass with a white backing; perhaps it is. And the backing is not totally opaque, thus the faint grey shadow around the bezel.
This is how it comes across to me when I see it. It just doesn't appeal to me at all, with the black you don't have that look and so it works for me.

I actually would greatly miss the mechanical button. I can pick up my iPad or iPhone in the middle of the night and know I have it the right way before turning it on.

I was playing with some touch button android phones at the Verizon store yesterday and was every so thankful i had my old school button.

Fine, sure you can say what you want about me.
But white is white, it's not exactly difficult/expensive to make the white iPhone simply white just as it's supposed to.

OCD or not, I think this kind of problem can turn some people's off. Maybe this problem is insignificant to you, but I think Apple could do better, make the layer or paint a bit thicker could simply solve the problem.

Like what Steve believe from Mark Markulla .... Customers have every rights to judge a product by its cover, and he still hold onto it years later, which makes what iToys become today, from packaging, design, and user experience :)

I don't think s/he is being too OCD at all. It's an expensive device that s/he will have to look at every day, and making the right initial choice is an important decision. As someone who bought the white and ended up regretting it I'm happy to share my opinion.

No sir, I don't worry about the reflection from ambient lights. But I do concerned about does the white iPhone chassis is thick enough? Because I think I could notice the it being a little translucent around the display area.

Does it really noticeable, yeah sure black iPhone may share the same problem, but because it's black it's kinda blend with the display border.

If you are so concerned then get black.

Is it just me, but does the white iPhone look more like a creme colored white instead of a "snow" white..a brighter, cleaner white

Hope u aren't upset, but I get where you're coming from. I haven't had a chance to see a white iphone in person, ever actually, and was wondering if it looked 'cheap' myself, and the only reason for that, in fact, was because I saw people on forums like these, this one included, saying they didn't like theirs or ones they played with. I read once on this very forum (before joining) someone saying it looked like cheap crap to them. Encouraging, no?

I too, like to know that something I'm spending over $600 bucks on looks like it was worth that lol
On the other hand, everyone has different standards, or might perceive something as cheap while others find it unnoticeable, so I guess it's hard for other people to tell you 'yeah you're not going to like it, it will look cheap to YOU!"
I don't like the idea of being able to see through the screen too much and hope it's only under certain light or something. (getting my white 4s this week) But I think I would keep it anyway, I have this (perhaps OCD) thing in my head where I now have to own a white iphone since I've only ever had black ones before lol
