I got several light scratches on the front of my iPhone 4 even though I never put in it my pocket with keys, money, etc: I have no idea where they came from!
I've now got an invisible shield on the front which does a good job of hiding the scratches

Owned mine since August. No scratches.
SGP Ultra on front, absolutely no degradation of Retina display quality. PhantomSkinz matte on back.
Only recently I've started to keep a case on it.. I swap between a Magpul case and a CAZE Thinedge bumper. Reason? I finally got a dockextender for the bulky ipod connector in my bmw. No longer do I have to remove the case to plug in my iPhone!

It goes wherever it fits: backpack pocket, lab coat pocket, jacket pocket, jeans back pocket, suit interior pocket, cupholder, etc.

so you have a screen protector on the front, one on the back AND a case and amazingly you have no scratches? who would have guessed!

Mines been naked since launch day and just has a few tiny hairline scratches on the back that you can only see in direct sunlight.

I have scratches all over mine. I take care of it the best I can. It gets it's own pocket. Always in case. No protector. But I sand floors for a living. The dust is unavoidable. It gets in behind the case and creates scratches. It's very noticeable without the case. My case has a diamond pattern on the inside and there is a diamond patern on the back of the phone now too. The antenna is also quite imperfect. The front has scratches. Let's face it is easy to scratch it. Those little rivets on the jeans near the pocket it goes into you have to be mindful of and I have earrings that touch the screen sometimes when I am talking. I find it impossible to keep it mint. Once I was over the initial discoveries I was ok. It doesn't affect the practical use of it whatsoever. The scratches cannot be seen with the screen on. Only when angled near a light source. I hope by iPhone6 when my contract is up they get rid of the glass on the back and aluminum on the side. It makes it look nice in the showroom but magnifies the defects later. Not to mention increases the likeliness of breakage. And yeah have had it since launch day.

i've had mine since launch day, have used Apple's bumper until yesterday. I never dropped it, I had been taking off the bumper once in a while to clean everything and I noticed some small scratches on the antenna, the glass is ok.
I'm now using it with no protection but I'll probably get a sena case or a case-mate vroom, I'll definitely not put anything on the screen

In the same boat as you. I don't usually use a case on my phones but the antennae problems meant I needed a bumper. Though I regularly clean it, there are still a number of blemishes on the stainless steel where dust has got trapped between the bumper and the phone and rubbed the surface off.

I'm not very impressed. :(

I've had mine since June last year, I flirted with cases and screen protectors for the first month.

Since then I haven't used any protection on the phone and I have not one scratch on it.

life's too short, especially for cellphones these days.

enjoy the display and take that shield off. if you are super worried, then buy some extra insurance. good luck.

It would be nice to keep it perfect but it's impossible for me. I didn't buy it as a fashion assessory, I bought it for all the cool crap it does and it does it well so I am happy.

Got my first phone on launch day. It was cracked a week later, replaced by Apple. Second phone lasted until I dropped in in November (back shattered). Before the drop, there were a gazillion scratches in what appeared to be the coating on the back of the phone and a few very fine hairline scratches on the front. You had to look in direct sunlight to see them. Phone was naked and always in a front pocket by itself. Occassionally, it would be set down on my desk, which is where I assume the scratches on the back came from.

In my experience, the back glass/coating scratches very easily, while the front - not so much.
