i wonder if the beeping is from the graphics card or not.

FWIW, i have MP 3GHz with the cheapest graphic card available (7300GT), and mine is silent as a mouse. the only thing i hear is the HD trying to read/write, and i really have to squint my ears to hear the fans going (sounds like a fridge in the next room... that quiet).

otherwise... no beeps. the HD read/write can get a bit loud at times tho; but knowing G4 Quicksilvers, no complaints.

I have the beep-problem on my new MBP Core 2 Duo too. I made a recording for those with interest:

Its not very loud but it's annoying. I would say that this most probably comes from the HDD as very often the beep comes just before some usual HDD-sound. Well, what am I complaining about when this silverbox otherwise ist sooo nice compared to my old G4 Powerbook.:)

that sounds like a HD spin up/down to me. i could be wrong tho, it's real faint.

ok, the recording of the beep was perfect. But the other night it did like 10 beeps in a matter of 4 seconds. I thought the thing was going to blow up. Has anyone called Apple on this yet???

I have a similar problem i was trying to find out what it is. but my beep is comming from the speakers. like the don't touch beep sound, out of nowhere when im listening to music i hear it, its annoying or when im just surfing the net or chatting.

As strange as it sounds but the beep has disappeared completely some days ago. Maybe it's because the HDD was a little rusty from the transportation and needed to turn a little till it became the high-performant thing it is now. :)

Note: This was a joke. The HDD was not rusty. Do not try to repair your HDD with a metal brush. :D

A quick google search on the issue brought me here.

I have heard the diagnostic beep, not sure what exactly triggers the beep but I'm guessing it hardware related.

I'm using a Mac Pro 2.66 with 1GB of RAM.

Here is what happened with me, I was working in MS Word (2004) and was trying to move a chart to the left a fraction, Word freezes (I save often so I'm not worried), I wait for a while.... Nothing...
So now I open the Activity Monitor and have a look, Microsoft Word is using 100% CPU and it's "Not Responding", since one thread is the problem only CPU #2 has the 100% utilization.
I now 'Show Processor Palette' from the Hardware MenuExtra (Part of CHUD tools), and decide to turn OFF CPU #2 (being a bit reckless and curious). I click the icon and the processor is OFF, as the processor is being switched OFF I hear a very short 'beep', oh S**T!! said I, the Mac Pro didn't crash or burst into flames or anything like that, and the 100% thread just moved to CPU #4.

I tried to make the beep happen again, but to no avail.

It's not a heat issue, the air being sucked in the front of the Mac Pro is reported to be 20 degrees Celsius (67 degrees Fahrenheit), thats COLD.

I guess the beep is there to let you know there is a problem or maybe data corruption (the RAM does have ECC), the PC at home beeps most of the way through the POST, and I'm guessing thats the hard drive not being ready (still spinning-up) or the CPU fan not at a suitable RPM, etc.

Oh no, I just ordered a Dell 2407 24" monitor and was waiting a couple of weeks to order a MacPro (in case of updates). Now I don't know what to think.
I hope this isn't a widespread issue. If it is, I'll cancel my Dell order, forget the MacPro and just buy another iMac.

To the OP:

Is there still an issue? What config do you have? Are the hard drives set to sleep when not in use?
What graphics card do you have?

That's not a beep, that's a bong! :D

I did get beeps when I tried to install the EFI firmware, version 1.1. For some reason, the EFI upgrader didn't seem to like running from a striped volume. I ran it from an external boot drive and it updated fine.

Otherwise, I have not had any beep problems.

I have this problem too on my brand new Macbook Pro 2,16 C2D.
It started the first day i used it, then went away, just to get back yesterday evening (4 days later).
Turning on and off the camera (i.e with photo booth) "fixes" it until next reboot.

I'm going to call Apple this afternoon.
has anybody already tried? Any answers from them?

I also have the beep...

i had the 7300GT and switched to the X1900... beeps in both situations so i don't think it's the GPU.

i have a segate and WD hdd in the machine also... seems to me that ppl reporting the beep are all using the segate hdd's.

I'm not overly concerned about it, only beeps like 3 times a week or so for me. I doubt it's anything serious. Mine has been beeping since day 1.

has anyone tried using temperature monitor or hardware monitor to see if any temperatures are really high?

No, I haven't. But my macbook pro seems absolutely cool, not hot at all.
I don't think is temperature related.

ANy word on this?

I have just experienced Rozzolo's symptoms on my new MacBook Pro 17 Core Duo 2.33 laptop. I get an intermittent beeping from the computer that sounds like the audio file that Rozzolo posted.

Launching and quitting Photobooth seems to have solved the problem, we'll see if it comes back.

beep...

Mine just got its internal HDD replaced, and is now beeping... frequently... like 1 beep a minute or so...

Maybe it'll go away soon ? cause this is 1st day I'm using it so... If not I'm bringing it in to a specialist and/or calling apple...

any lucks you guys ?

Mines beep as well

Yeah my mac pro i just moved about 4 days ago the cable guy came to install my cable modem and nothing was ever wrong with my mac pro but when i turned it on. i only heard a loud beep when i turn it on i have no clue what this beep is from would love to get rid of it because it sounds like its going to explode or die. but i do not have it while i am doing anything in any O.S. only when i turn on the computer and its about to Boot into the O.S. and its on on boot camp / windows XP or Leopard

if anyone has called apple or anyone knows how to get rid of these please help Thank's Guys!

Beeps at boot only(not while you are in the OS) means there is a problem with either your RAM or Logic Board. Since it only happened, in your case, after it was moved, my guess would be that a stick or two of ram got a little loose in its socket. I bet if you reseat all your ram and reseat the risers it'll probably go away.

Never had such a beep.

If I were you, I would check HDD temp and SMART status, CPU temp, RAM temp and ECC status, and every other possible hardware failure ...

Bluetooth causes mac to beep

Turn off your bluetooth. You can find it in the upper right hand corner, to the left of the speaker icon, in the finder gray bar.:apple:
