UPDATED 9/14 with current status. It's an iOS bug I have with my push mail (read beyond the original marking them as read problem)

    Hopefully I worded that right.

Since the great email zap, things have seemed "odd". Prior to that, I was a new iPhone owner and so still exploring the dynamics of having the iPhone/iPad/online show the same thing. Since the zap however, it seems that I can read something on the phone - and the phone will still show it as new. I have waited to see how long it is taking to sync either.

My iPad also seems to not be using push for email. Every time I launch mail it must download messages - and we are talking 6+ hours behind. This never happened before the server move that caused the zap. The phone seems to be pushing it correctly (verizon 4.2.6) on the MobileMe side. However, I swear it is chiming the new mail sound.

Because I'm not a Dev, I'm obviously not trying the iCloud stuff. Are these types of strangeness that might be occurring over there during the testing phase?

I just realized I have a 2nd MobileMe account on the iPad, maybe it has taken over as the primary? I will have to go check that -if i can -and can delete it anyway....

Thanks for any input you might have.

ETA: I know now that the reads don't ouch, but are supposed to update every 15 minutes. Mine weren't and I had other push problems that the MobileMe team was/is investigating. If you read further down you will have a few updates with that....

I managed to find that, and the account is set to push on the iPad.

When i launched email a bit before 9, it had 8 messages from 4:29-current to download. Then i read one on the iPhone and it never did update on the iPad... I had to do a manual check.

    Obviously something is mucked...... Somewhere.

might help to narrow down which one has problems, as me.com is the main source for mail

read an email on iPhone, then check on me.com, does it show as read
do the same for iPad and desktop, see which one doesnt update me.com properly

I can go do that, but I realize it wasn't clear that it was the iPad that had the messages to download when launched. I haven't been on the computer since yesterday morning.

I've known something was wonky for a bit, but just finally put it together last night waiting in the emergency room. Strange that that was a quiet environment that let me think! LOL!!

    what i'm seeing....

logged into mobileme via safari, the iphone in mail, the ipad in mail.

read via web - has yet to send read down after 5 minutes to either iphone or ipad.

read via iphone - web updates instantly, ipad still not updated (ipad showing last update at 10:30 - it's 10:37)

(**did a manual update on iphone and ipad, everything sync'd**)

read via ipad - updates web instantly, iphone waiting. it went to sleep and upon waking it connected and updated.

I do notice that the mobileme.com page is showing down in the lower left that it is still loading the page. No matter what i click on it isn't loading the last item - completed 29 of 30, completed 34 of 35.

    It never finishes.....

But regardless, the iphone and ipad aren't talking to one another either....

****** additional things MobileMe had me check******

Was find my idevice active - yes

Can mobileme via safari find them - yes, very accurately for the ipad, within 100 feet for the iphone

Can they receive messages via find my - yes, instantly. This apparently uses the same system as the mail.

The MobileMe team has done all they can, they are elevating it.... all via my iOS dude that talked to them for me.

Because it is part of my higher up call on my zapped email i'm hoping we get more answers.

I think this is the problem my parents are having too.... and they aren't getting any answers.

Hope they get it fixed soon for you

Be interested in knowing what they do to fix this, if they tell you

Shall we take bets on them telling? LOL!

It shall be like the phone company and our data lines back in the day. You call, they find nothing... but it magically starts working before the tech shows up. The good 'ole reboot thing.....

While i'd like to know, i'll take it just starting to work!

(i'm going to go append the testing i did with what the mobileme people had me try)

For what its worth, MobileMe mail in the web syncs pretty much right away with my iPhone.

With bot apps open it will take a couple of seconds for the web to mar as read after i've done so on my phone.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A5274d Safari/7534.48.3)

I thought that was by design. Could be mixing things up. I thought they did not push mail read updates. Maybe save battery. You may want to search for a similar thread.

Good point, I forgot about that (havent looked into it for a while so unsure if still the case)

iOS device will add to the badge count when it gets a new mail, but will not reduce the count if its read on another device

so if my iPhone shows 3 unread, I read these on my Mac, iPhone will show 3 unread until I open the app at which point the 3 will get marked as read

Interesting. You would have thought the iOS guy and the MobileMe guy would have mentioned that?

I just did another reboot on my iPad to see if i can get it to push. However, I just launched mail on my iPhone and it had to DL a message from almost 15 minutes ago that didn't push.

Until recently I only had the iPad, so what it did it did - except i know I was able to hear the new mail chime and have the message be there when i opened it. That isn't happening on the iPad, and sometimes on the iPhone. Which lent itself to thinking messages were going missing.

If i wanted it on fetch, I'd Put it on fetch......

I found something saying that, at least originally (2008) it was limited mac->device was limited to every 15 minutes - unless you did a manual sync. What I'm not clear about is if that is mac only, or includes the web changes.

I kept the iPad active for over 20 minutes and it certainly isn't doing even that. I'm going to have to mess around with it, but i can't today.

So I reread it, and the me.com stuff is supposed to push, just the mac stuff waits.

I'm cautiously optimistic - I think my push issue might have cleared up. Will require more testing today.....

However, I came home last night to a power outage and a completely dead cable modem (along with no basic cable, that I don't use nor pay for, but have because the guy didn't put the filter on the pole). We had a massive storm cell move thru the area, so it isn't surprising with my above ground wet strings. I finally convinced the guy that me driving all over creation to get a new modem wasn't going to fix things and he scheduled a service call.... For Saturday. Meanwhile, overnight it came back and it appears the push is now working like it should. My iPad had the overnight mail all sitting there when i launched it.

I will be mega happy if it did, I'm not up to the troubleshooting the MobileMe team wants to do... But will if I must. I'd much rather things just work.

I'm cool with the read things not pushing as long as the rest is working....

Update: while i have confirmed with the MobileMe guy that the reads aren't pushed - they should be fixed at the next 15 minute interval.... I'm still have funky things going on.

So much that the engineers still are testing and trying to figure out what is going on. I can assume they are seeing oddities on their devices accessing my account, just like I am. at this point i have feelings as to my issues being device ones, ISP ones or MobileMe.

Anyway, no answers yet.... But they are still looking into it.

I thought this was how it worked. If I read an email on my iPad, it does not appear read on my iPhone until I manually open the inbox.

This has always been the way for me

I heard from my Executive Care contact Tuesday that MobileMe considers the problem fixed. I have no clue what they did, he indicated that late last week they thought they were getting close to fixing it.

It had quit pushing on it's own midweek, and I did a full shutdown on the iPad which can restore it for awhile, then it would stop again - usually during the night (or in the case of the Comcast outage i had, it started working when they came back up).

The result is, it has been working as expected since Saturday. This is the longest I have gone since the great mail restore with it pushing.

I kept expecting them to say it was the iPad or Comcast but they never did - so obviously they were able to replicate the issue on their end? Dunno.... But it is nice to have it working as advertised - often with the iPad chiming before the iPhone now!

Now, here is hoping i just didn't jinx myself by posting this!

The read status of mail has never been pushed to any idevice in the past. I was hoping with iCloud this would change but so far it hasn't.

If u open the new mail on the iPad or iPhone it will get marked as read immediately on the cloud and mail.app on the mac os gets updated instantly.

However if u open a mail on mac os or the cloud it's read status is not sent to the devices.

Only when new mail comes in thereafter does the new updated badge count get pushed to the advices.

It's been like this since day 1.

The only way to fix this is to turn off push and go to fetch. This means every 15min, the badge count gets automatically updated.

THanks..... But I actually had moved beyond that discovered non-problem to the fact that my push was randomly shutting itself off and starting back up. During that time the every 15 minute thing doesn't happen either, but my fetch email for my google account does keep working every 15.

I actually updated to soon and had another glitch yesterday.... They are going to reopen it and look at it some more. So yes, I did indeed jinx myself by posting. Ugh.

At this point.... I am no where.

I've logged push starting and stopping until I'm blue in the face. Ironically I can't email the logs to them, I have to use iDisk (MobileMe online rejects the attachment) to get them there.

Apparently, something is turning PUSH off on my iPad, then turning it back on. The official take on it is that it is a bug in iOS, that the MobileMe side is working properly), but while it has been escalated to iOS to be looked at - there isn't anyone available to address it.

They threw out some suggestions that came across as a diversion (the delivery of this message stunk btw), I'm not sure why something that works in my iPhone would be causing issues on the iPad, but the only advice is to mark all my messages as read, and to move them out of the inbox and into folders to reduce the overhead.

I'm frustrated beyond words. Right now, while it wasn't voiced, I was left with the suggestion of, "see if it goes away in ios5".

That said, it will probably be awhile before I can go to ios5, because I can't manage to get my mini upgraded to Snow Leopard (I need Rosetta, it can't go to lion), and I don't have any expectations that Leopard will be supported under the next version of iTunes.

So basically I'm left with a, "sucks to be you" problem. I'm experiencing a bug, I can't afford a new computer, I can't afford the upgrade I need to make to my mini to upgrade, I'm going to be left dealing with the bug which serves as a constant reminder of how much it sucks to be me at times for who knows how long.

And you know, they could have at least tossed me an iTunes card to help take my mind off of it....

Anyway, that is the update for now. Welcome to the reason for iCloud.
