my original 15" unibody 2008 has just started doing it. im listening to an audio book at pretty low volume. i thought id check the forums. if it is a common problem then i probably wont go to apple about it. why is it the right speaker only? weird. hey ho.

My left side rattles, If I put my hand over the keyboard on the left side it stops, so I think it's a keyboard key doing it.

For anyone with applecare-

My UMBP still rattles. It seems like it should be smart having apple replacing it or how they would even handle these type issues?

I'm a bit skeptical about a refurb... I've only really had iphones replaced before. Any thoughts about it?

I only remember when I had a dell laptop  (it was a huge lemon) and dell actually sent me a brand new laptop with the newest update processor, etc.

Of course bought my UMBP fully loaded costing ~2600, so it feels like I should atleast have a laptop without visiting apple stores in the last 2 years... I'm really not interested buying a new laptop, and I usually hold on to laptops for 4 years or so until they seem important for me

All I can guess about the rattling coming from the unibody from manufacturing... thoughts?

yes, my 2011 15" high end unibody has rattled since the day i bought it. i should have returned it for a new one instead i had geniuses repair it and they cannot find a fix. im expecting a new mbp within the next few visits. mine makes the noise on almost any audio above 50%

I agree with you. I am totally fine with if apple would allow sending me a brand new laptop with the latest updates if I have to pay a little bit. I'm not greedy asking for anything free, but I am surprised that the rattling havent been fixed in the designing manufacturing. :( Apple has been pretty fair with my other products from them, so I suppose I'll update the thread if they'll offer helping me out.

Just honestly- I really planned keeping this laptop for a long while since I never end up selling my old laptops as keeping as extras and its pretty annoying having rattles.

Its the time now to talk to AppleCare about my rattling issues including how my battery almost blew up and it totally tweaked my whole laptop and the lid is even flat. The store replaced my battery, but obviously that doesnt fix my warped unibody.

Note: My AppleCare ends in 10 days before its too late. Apple needed to have handled all the manufacture issues with the rattling. We'll see how my conversation goes with them since I do know that the apple stores wouldn't be able to handle the situation from several appointments at the genius bar.

The rattling does my head in. It's pretty embarrassing that a brand new £2k laptop can't handle the volume being turned up louder than 70%.

My same thoughts. We'll see what they'll [Apple] be able to do for me. Mine is a late '08. However- I'm curious which year yours is if theres any differences since mine.

I honestly think a 50% vote having rattling is a serious issue. I can understand if I was the only person, then I'm sure I would have returned it within 2 weeks since I bought it.

Friends-

I sent my 15" UMBP to apple right before my applecare ended which I hadn't have time without it for work, but I had to deal without it but this is why-

I requested my repair on Dec. 5th this month and they were very helpful and offered to send out a shipping box to send it to their repair center which it is in tennessee which I wasn't aware without having to send anything to apple for repairs in more 10 years since I usually had most small issues at the genius bar.

The strange note- The first box was supposed to show up within 1 day and after a week, I contacted apple and I said, "is there a problem since I haven't seen a box to send my laptop in..." ... The answer was from the senior advisor that handled the repair and he said- "the box was returned here, but its not here." I was a bit confused since I never saw it since I was pressed for time anyway. He right away and offered to send the SECOND box, I thought.. great, mistakes can happen, and no big deal. I'll wait until I see the box in a couple days. Did that box show up?

I contacted them after almost a full week again, "Ok, this is not working right, I cannot understand why I haven't seen a single box, can you check the tracking #s that were connected with my boxes that were supposed to be sent?"

-The FIRST box was noted that it was NEVER sent nor ever returned that was interesting for me. This different advisor who said, I will send another one after having it approved and then, a box showed up within 2 days and I was glad that it finally showed up and I sent my laptop out asap.

I had printed out a complete letter about the issues with the rattling and exactly how to explain how it happens and how to see it and different ways that made it fairly simple to find it. I even printed THIS thread about how there is a huge common issue with nearly 50% members in this thread that have rattling issues. That cannot be normal.

I received an email from apple that they could NOT duplicate my issues with my laptop, I was thinking.. are they kidding me? I sent them a TON information including this thread and all that it should have been enough to make it simple. I again had to explain it in a different way and AGAIN linking to this thread if it helps if they actually didnt even read anything I sent them. They finally answered and they said they will replace the speakers. I then asked, The first advisor had mentioned that the entire unibody casing would be replaced since I figured that it was a good idea if there was some manufacture issue causing the rattling...

I got a response and they said, basically saying- Fine, we'll replace it too to make sure it works well.. ok.

Obviously, you will know that it is fairly quick to have them to replace a few little things in 1 day and sending it back, it was a whole 3 day vacation in tennesee-apple-land.

My laptop came back TODAY nearly 1 full month including the nonsense box issues which ate most of the time. ugh...

I was restoring my time machine backups since I always clear my hard drive when leaving it at the apple stores or of course sending it out, the same thing. I was all setup, and ready to go. I noticed... My Laptop felt really slow. This can't be right.

As a note- I custom ordered my laptop as a 2.8Ghz Intel Duo 2 / 4gb ram...

It comes back with a 2.53ghz, and I first thought... Maybe they made a mistake and they sent me back the wrong laptop, but I checked my serial in the "about this mac" and, yup, its 'my' laptop, but its a bit odd... I went ahead and reset the PRAM 2x to see if something caused that but it did NOTHING to pop back up to 2.8ghz, still same 2.53ghz. I won't be too excited to have another discussion about this terrible repairing that made it worse.

The LAST thing back to the RATTLING all about this thread, anyway-

The Rattling/ Buzzing is STILL there. It was an entire waste of time for a month for nothing but receiving a slower machine and rattling.

Mine does it, but i find it is only on lower quality audio.

Its pretty annoying. A this point, its a lot more frustrating that my laptop came back with the WRONG processor since they noted that they replaced my logic board. How could they possibly do that?

Solution: Vibrating Speakers

13 inch Macbook Pro speaker on right hand side was vibrating.

I opened the case and there is a plastic pull thing that is to pull the hard drive out (silver box). I assume this was vibrating against the metal case. I fixed the problem by using sticky tape to attach the plastic pull thing back down to the hard drive :)

Regardless- I had my C2D MBP 'lemon'd' sorta. I bought a new i7 and at least it doesn't rattle. I guess some of the original unibodies had some glitches, but no issues yet.

although I don't get a rattle under those circumstances, I do get a very tinny or 'bzzzz'-y sound out of my left speaker when I'm listening to music of a certain pitch or if I'm watching youtube videos.

The hinge also is a bit loose next to the left speaker and the speaker doesn't seem to make the noise when I hold my finger down (lightly) on the far left of the hinge so I'm guessing my problem is a vibrating part.

Either way I'm in my 14 day period so I may just get apple to swap it over when I take it in for a broken return key on saturday...

You might be ok, I think the newer ones are better. The original unibodies rattled a lot and the votes have changed a lot since I created this thread.

I'm just not worried anymore, but check out yours before your exchange window ends. its easier than dealing with warranty.
