Alright Apple, woohoo.

itunes Movies also get free upgrade with the atmos soundtrack.

I just need to find a Dolby Atmos setup that will pass through 4k DV and HDR to my TV, because my 2016 LG doesn't support Atmos over ARC. :(.

...whether this is limited strictly to iTunes purchases or whether third party apps can have access to pass-through / uncompressed bit-streaming.
Own rips must be supported as well!
Lets wait and see, how did they implement it.
No ETA was mentioned either...

Hooray!

And wasn't it nice to see an actual person that is apparently dedicated to the :apple:TV at Apple? I suspected such people must exist but it's nice to actually see one. ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong but last year wasn't the entirety of the big announcements for tvOS that Amazon- a completely separate company- was bringing their app to :apple:TV?

This year, a woman implied to be directly connected to it takes the stage, rolls out a biggie and then goes on to roll out some other features too. There's hope that dedicated talent is there to actually work on features for :apple:TV!!! Sooooo welcome. And keep 'em coming (bug fixes too).

I thought that she was fab too. She had the same enthusiasm as myself for the ATV! She was really passionate - I liked that very much.

Yup finally! Can't wait it release soon. :D

Now I will consider a Dolby Atmos Soundbar.
SUPER HAPPY! :) So glad that I decided to buy from iTunes for the last 10 years :)

Let's not jump the gun. It depends on implementation and whether this is limited strictly to iTunes purchases or whether third party apps can have access to pass-through / uncompressed bit-streaming.
Well, they talked about it with iTunes so maybe just for iTunes 4K streams - that's 100% OK for me as I buy my film through iTunes :)

Most modern receivers will pass DV and HDR. Denon and Yamaha are both very popular.

“...must be supported..”????? You serious?

When has Apple ever supported illegal activity? (yes, ripping DVD/Blueray is illegal)

I’m not a lawyer and may be wrong but my understanding has been that the legality of backing up of discs your own for personal use has always been controversial. Nvidia, obviously a large company has partnered with Plex and their box (Shield) bitstreams HD audio. The main source and only real reason to support HD audio bitstreaming as you suggest is from ripped discs. So far I have not heard of any lawsuits against Nvidia or Plex. I’m assuming Apple just doesn’t even want to touch that space which I understand though. I’m not expecting Apple to ever officially support it.

Whenever you rip a disc you are breaking its copyright software. That is the illegal part. Plex can’t be sued because they are not the ones doing the ripping.... you are.

Here’s the thing, nobody cares.

Won't happen, so far DTS:X is only used on 4K Blu-rays, no streaming service uses it. Lets pray they enable Atmos via passthrough in an API, so Infuse and MrMMC can use it besides iTunes.

If it is iTunes only, then users will be *** off

Yep. It doesn't matter where the bitstream comes from. If it is an Atmos-stream, it should play.
It is exactly the same with current AVC, HEVC, DD and DD+ playback - once the system can handle it, your own clips may take advantage as well.

Still waiting for Denon to add DV passthrough to my receiver. Have to go straight to TV with sound via arc to the receiver for sound at the mo.
Supposed to be coming this year, hopefully before Atmos comes to AppleTv.
