I have updated my Apple TV to tvOS 12 and Atmos isn't working as of yet using a file i know has a 7.1 soundtrack so either Plex need to update their app to use atmos or it isn't quite enabled yet.

Could you check if there is a new sound output option in stettings?
Like "passthrough"?

The problem with passthrough at the moment might be Siri.
Since Siri "talks" over the audio even during movie playback, a "real" passthrough option might disable Siri.
So it will be intresting how they solve this problem...

Don't they just pause playback when Siri kicks in ? Not hard to do... pause video playback (= no bitstream), do Siri via PCM over HDMI, Siri out, resume video with bitstream via passthrough.

I've read somewhere else that Atmos is "MIA" in the beta at the moment....

Wouldn't surprise me if all the 4K content in iTunes already had Atmos seeing as how Atmos is just metadata added to either DD+ or TruHD. As Apple don't let you download 4K films there's no way to check. I am interested to see how they maintain 'system sounds' with DD+ - perhaps they have agreed with Dolby to 'pass-through' the Atmos metadata - i.e. the DD+ stream is decode on the ATV, system sounds are added and the DD+ stream is re-encoded with Atmos metadata inteact.

Yep. It doesn't matter where the bitstream comes from. If it is an Atmos-stream, it should play.
It is exactly the same with current AVC, HEVC, DD and DD+ playback - once the system can handle it, your own clips may take advantage as well.

And if Dolby tells Apple it must restrict it to certified content.... then what?

It's not enabled in the first beta release.

Won't happen, so far DTS:X is only used on 4K Blu-rays, no streaming service uses it. Lets pray they enable Atmos via passthrough in an API, so Infuse and MrMMC can use it besides iTunes.
While no streaming services use it, any box that has atmos also has DTS:X. For local content at least. Almost as if enabling atmos enables the other.
Too many unknowns at this point.

That would be unfortunate. Means we need to return back to our smart TV-s.
My Bravia plays happily both Dolby Vision Profile 5 and DD+ / Atmos from USB stick.

So..they shouldn’t be a trailblazer then. Got it.

It would give them no benefit. It’s not used for streaming content they can sell you.

Sure I want it. But it really wouldn’t be realistic for them to do it. From a business perspective.

Apple doesn’t own the content they sell. They could put all the codecs in the world on their devices. But if the content owners aren’t selling it with those codecs....what business sense does it make? The majority of the market does not care about the stuff people here care about. We represent such a minuscule share of the market that we are practically non-existent.

Yup finally! Can't wait it release soon. :D

Now I will consider a Dolby Atmos Soundbar.

Considering the ATMOS experience can be had on a simple sound bar, doesn’t it make sense that the HomePods should be capable of ATMOS as well, with their dynamically adjusting speaker system? I’d think they would be the perfect ATMOS speakers?

So the big question is whether the current homepods will do it with a firmware update, or if customers will have to buy the next upgrade?

So many people keep saying this without realizing that the HomePod is incapable of bouncing audio off the ceiling properly for a bonafide Atmos experience.

HomePods is not selling in my country yet, I had no idea how it sound. Secondly I think it is design more for music instead of movie.

I bought the 6 speakers could be independently adjusted to any angle to reflect the room geometry? Why couldn’t they be aimed at the ceiling for ATMOS? The Sony soundbars I’ve seen, don’t even aim upward at that radical of an angle and qualify for ATMOS.

The HomePod speakers just face outward and can only reflect off of walls.

I assume you're talking about the HT-ST5000, which says 7.1.2. The 7 are the 7 speakers on the front, the traditional surround speakers, though this design will only give you pseudo-surround at best. The .1 is the subwoofer. The .2 are the Atmos enabled speakers and if you look at one of the pictures on the following page, you can see they're located at the ends on top of the unit.

Thanks for clarifying. Looks like we’ll need a HomePod 2.0 for ATMOS.

Totally. With iTunes store and Apple TV 4K having Atmos this fall and HDMI 2.1 with eARC in 2019 let's see if 2019 is the year for some new exciting Atmos soundbars :)
Should see some really exciting new TVs too :)

Atmos would be a great addition but I'm still running a 5.1 system and would prefer DTS-HD or TrueHD. The 4k picture from the ATV is awesome but the sound is a bit of a let down compared to lossless audio from a Blu-ray.

I know, i'm in two minds whether that would ever happen...
1. Apple are truly giving Apple TV 4K 100% love
OR different the opposite angle
2. Alternatively, Apple have never embraced lossless in iTunes (too tiny a market) HOWEVER the film market is different I guess

Finally, DD+ (which ATV Atmos may be based on) is less compressed that DD - it was originally for HD DVD (remember that in 2006???). You may actually be impressed.

Let's see but in all fairness, Apple TV 4K simply seems to get better and better every year!!! Who knows what audio options for it may be available in iTunes in a year or so :)

Discs in my house are totally history now and man, I don't miss those tatty plastic cases and sticking / freezing of films and horrible copyright notice which is an insult to any educated person!

I still have and buy UHD and Blu-ray discs.

I was looking into the Xbox One S because it will stream DTS-HD from Fandango which is interesting for me.

If Apple adds DD+, I'll be happy until I can upgrade to Atmos.
