Dolby Atmos music playback is now supported in Apple Music for Windows, bringing true immersive audio to PCs with compatible hardware via Apple's music streaming service for the first time.

Dolby Atmos is a surround-sound audio format that allows sound to be heard in an immersive, three-dimensional audio experience with compatible stereo headphones and speakers. Apple's Spatial Audio technology takes Dolby Atmos content and applies its own directional audio filters to make sounds appear to be coming from all around you.

The feature was added in version 1.1284.20225 of Apple Music for Windows. A new Apple Support document called "Play Dolby Atmos in Music on Windows" explains how to use it on a PC.

Apple Music for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro, Apple TV, and Android already supported Dolby Atmos audio. Spatial Audio via Dolby Atmos debuted on Apple's music streaming service in June 2021.

Ignorant question: why?
I have a full Atmos home theater setup but if I stream Apple Music to my receiver or tv it’s just stereo but I can activate it on my Windows pc with just a stereo speaker setup. What does Apple mean with Atmos??

My first experience with Apple products was iTunes on Windows. I kind of miss the simplicity.

The biggest mistake they made with Apple Music was trying to shoehorn the iTunes library management in with the streaming service. They should've spun old iTunes off as a separate utility for people who still want that.

Apple Music tries to be a music streaming app and a music library management app and does neither very well.

That's one (of several) reasons I don't use Apple Music. I don't want my personal music library mixed with streaming.

Once I got my head around it, that’s actually the main reason I use Apple Music.

I still buy and rip cds. There is no easy way for me to see if a an album is mine when buying on the go, if I already have it my library.

Additionally, a quite a bit of my personal music was replaced with Apple's versions, a couple of the times I tried Apple Music, which aren't always the same. I had to restore from a backup.

If you value your iPhone as an alarm clock you have to turn off Dolby Atmos. Apple has been aware since at least October (when I encountered a bug) that if you use a song as your wake-up song, the alarm doesn't work if Dolby Atmos is turned on. I can't believe Apple hasn't fixed this bug in around 6 months since working as a 100% reliable alarm clock should be table stakes.

I think the intention was to phase out the library completely, but they couldn’t do that since some people have already purchased thousands of songs. The iPod is dead, so the library is dead. Now it’s all about streaming music.

I feel like this is of limited utility unless I can output Dolby Atmos via HDMI so I can hear it on a real receiver/soundbar. I will have to test this to see if it works (luckily my LG TV will output Atmos on Apple Music over HDMI so I can get it on my good receiver.)

If you value your phone as alarm clock, you're a masochist.

have they fixed the constant audio drop outs and glitching in normal playback?

i uninstalled it and went back to Spotify on Windows.

Can stream Dolby Atmos from my phone and my iPad to my ATV/paired HomePod setup... but can't stream Dolby Atmos to the same setup from either my MBP or brand new desktop Mac Studio.

I've done so much research on this. Can't figure out the issue at all. Nobody in apple customer service seems to be able to help either.

Would like to see this fixed!
