We have a hard enough time finding qualified people to take STEM jobs more likely they would be filled by immigrants coming to the US for those jobs.

That is complete nonsense, pushed by businesses who find it costs less over the longer term to import labor. If you look into unemployment numbers in those fields, there isn't some enormous deficit of workers. Don't buy into ********.

Not everyone is cut out for STEM jobs. And not everyone is a minimum wage service worker. These are the in between middle class blue-collar jobs that have disappeared.
And those jobs are not coming back no matter what people like Trump claim, we have to figure out a way to make the economy work without those jobs.

It might take 8 more years for the left to realize that name calling lost them this election. The American people are growing weary of same-old, same-old politics and non-stop name calling and race-baiting

If you want to really look at whose policies favor racial suppression in this country, look to the left, where there are no success stories and generations of dependency on the government.

The so-called black leadership have personally made millions on the backs of the repressed. They have no plans to change anything and their political cronies are in full alignment because they have been guaranteed the black vote for decades.

The game stops now.

So melodramatic.

The game stops now.

Okay. Detail the steps that will end "the game."

We have tried Obama's way. These out of work middle class workers voted for Obama twice. It didn't change anything. They feel the need to try something else. Trump may be offering lip service but he seems to making the effort.

I do know one thing. Our current policies with taxes and trade deals have exasperated the problem.

Lol...source?

$13B in taxes in 2015.

"The profit leader was Apple, which forked over nearly $13 billion in taxes on $68 billion in gross profits, according to its 2015 cash flow statement. That’s up from $10 billion in cash taxes paid in 2014. Warren Buffett’s Berkshire paid about $4.5 billion in taxes, while ExxonMobil paid about $7.3 billion, down from $18 billion in 2014 (when oil prices were higher)."

Apple was #2 in 2014 below. But #1 in 2015. Data isn't in for 2016 yet.

Why the LOL? I thought this was common knowledge.

I recall very well my employer bringing in a ton of H1B workers from India, and even opening an Indian design center, despite the fact that we had plenty of American applicants for our jobs designing microprocessors. Presumably because Americans demand to be paid more. Pissed me off.

But the Fake News says otherwise.

that's for the US, but do you have a chart that includes the world (which was your claim of course).....it'd be interesting to see

Since US has the highest corporate tax rate and Apple is among the most profitable companies in the world, good chance apple is pretty high up on the world wide tax paying list too.

Exactly. I couldn't find the global tax payer list but Apple isn't just among the most profitable but the MOST profitable in the world.

I stand by my original statement.

that's true, productivity gains over the last 30 to 40 years have sustained manufacturers' profits but the result is that they no longer create the same number of jobs as would have been expected in the past.......any manufacturing that "returns" to the US simply isn't going to provide enough new jobs to replace the jobs that were lost when those manufacturers left in the first place

it wouldn't surprise me, but when it comes the US's "highest corporate tax rate", do the math and you'll see that Apple paid a significantly lower rate than that "highest" rate......maybe even lower than your own personal income tax rate ;)

I'm not surprised......being the most profitable, then they should quite reasonably also be paying the most tax

Their effective rate was certainly lower than mine, but still higher than they would have paid in other countries.

The jobs may not all come back but why not make an effort instead of making things worse. What should we do with the millions of unemployed workers?

The effective tax rate is less than it should be because of legal loopholes that Congress has already put in place by lobbying from large corporations.

Apple paid an effective tax of 30%. More than most.

If Trump has is way and lowers the statutory rate but removes these loopholes, the effective rate could actually go up.

Tim Cook said as much to Congress.

That's between Apple and Ireland. I don't like it but it's all legal.

Unfortunately it's part of the problem that could frustrate any attempt to get companies like Apple to return manufacturing to the US in any significant way.

as you said;

In many cases, it's tax policy that has provided the incentive for manufacturers to go overseas in the first place.

Exactly. If Trump lowers the corporate tax rate to 10% or 15%, that money would come rushing back here. Is it too late to bring manufacturing back? I don't know but I appreciate the effort. I'm sure it will have some positive impact to the US economy. We're talking over $2T parked overseas!

It's disgusting. They're also the only ones trying to pass laws that are explicitly racist, calling them "Affirmative Action." I understand that the goal is to put non-White people in higher positions, but it doesn't really work and creates nasty conflicts. Meanwhile, certain minorities (i.e. Indians and eastern Asians), who are usually hurt by these rules, have risen above Whites in many areas like average income. And many of them also have disadvantages like the language barrier because they're immigrants.

Apple employs two kinds of people. Highly paid professionals at the top end (corporate) and service jobs at the bottom end (stores).

What's missing is the middle class blue-collar manufacturing job that got outsourced to China.

That's a big reason the middle class is dying in the US.

The manufacturing jobs in China are likely not the level of the service (sales and genius positions) in Apple stores. They are vocational preparation jobs (there is a process and a number of steps and following those steps get the job done -- very structured situation) and will probably be automated in the near future as have such jobs in the USA. For Trump to say he's going to return manufacturing to the USA when both costs and technology suggest otherwise show his naivety in the USA manufacturing world.

For years, Apple has been looking at ways to bring manufacturing back to the US. I believe automation is the key, not taxes.

Tax incentives may not be enough to offset the increase in labor to make products here, but more automation and fewer workers might make it feasible. In that case, how does a US manufacturing plant with few jobs and no taxes benefit the US economy?
A few more jobs in the US, is better than 300 000 jobs in China.

Trump will make a deal, a really great deal, he has all the top people, so American will win again. We'll get tired of winning with Trump's great deals, I can tell you that. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it. Believe me.

Apple is coming back, right after we build the wall. A really great wall.
The iWall would probably be too thin for a headphone jack
