My strategy for now is to just get by with some cables/dongles before I get a hub. I think by early next year we'll see some better products that are designed specifically for the new 13"/15" Pros so I'd rather hold out for those before spending a lot on something that was designed with the 12" MacBook in mind.

That being said, that new Belkin hub they've announced seems to be the best one yet if you need something for a desk application. Hope it comes out soon.

I went with this one. Not taking any chances when it comes to USB-C stuff. Last thing I need is a poor cable to fry my laptop and/or my NEC display.

Monoprice appears to sell the exact same cable for $5 cheaper: http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=12908

Ah! I saw the monoprice one after I posted, but the fact that google is selling the cable makes me feel much better. Totally agree that it's better to be safe than sorry. Thanks!

I'd like to get a 5k (maybe 4k) monitor that uses a single usb-c. I'll then use a usb-c to usb-b to hook up my old hub to the monitor.

Any new usb-c peripherals will be plugged into the built in hub on the monitor.

I'm doing the same. Hoping the monoprice 4 USB adapter for 15 and the usbc to hdmi ones don't break anything.

I picked up this Havit hub from Amazon. Main reason I chose this hub was for the USB ports, SD port, and pass-through charging. Figured I could leave my 3 external drives plugged in all the time.

I also bought a pair of these Nonda adapters. They're compact, match the color of the MBP, and will be good for smaller accessories

Lastly a usb-c lightning adapter because I didn't feel like using a dongle for my phone.

In all honesty, I could probably get buy with only the adapters or only the hub, but whatever. Guess I had a 'take my money' sign on my back that day.

Sorry if I've missed something but does anyone have confirmed info on the "Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2" adapter?

I currently have:
TB2 > Ethernet
TB2 > DVI
and use a Minidisplay port monitor

Does anyone know if these will work with the new adapter?

- You are correct. If there's no audio support, there won't be an option, and you don't have to do anything.

- There are USB-C to HDMI from third parties all over. Just do an Amazon search.
Probably worth it to just go straight to HDMI. I appreciate the heads up.

Since HDMI generally carries audio (although my monitor does not accept audio), is there anything I'd need to do when I boot it connected to the monitor, like switch the audio output every time? I'm supposing in my scenario, HDMI would just carry the video and there wouldn't even be any audio option.

You can switch the audio to your MBP speakers and let the video go to the monitor in "system preferences" --> "sound".

I Need Ethernet, HDMI and USB 3 and I'm looking for a portable one cable solution.

After researching on Amazon I coulnd't find a decent hub, most have terrible Quality, are unstable or whatever.

Anyone got an idea?

I tried branded cables and they were just rubbish. Buy the apple cable for HDMI and USB3. Ethernet is much harder. I use a Huwaei e5770 Mifi device which has an ethernet port. Got it for £50 on eBay.

This is all fine, and I'm glad it's working out for you. Most of the people in this thread are struggling with other issues:
  • How to be a mobile presenter when you need to use whatever projector is given you - means need to connect to VGA and HDMI.
For that I have had to buy 2 apple HDMI cables (lost one) and a HDMI to VGA adapter. So far its been okay.

This is the one I just bought.

I have several Hyper products. Good company.

I considering the same device but at that price I would not buy 3rd party as for only a few more dollars/pounds/euros you can get the official cable.

One word of WARNING!!! DO not buy the Dell adapters. I think they changed something with the recent models. VGA and USB worked perfectly and the USB-C dongle looks great but the HDMI doesn't work at all and kept crashing my MB.

- TB2 to Ethernet will work. The adaptor does not work with Mini DisplayPort accessories or adaptors, which is what I'm guessing your "TB2 > DVI" actually is.

Pleaae I am still running my good old 27" apple led cinema display.

Its great and all and I have no intention of replacing it.

The problem is that my 2014 rMBP got stolen recently,

Right now i am considering buying the new touchbar MBP, but am afriad of the lack of the ports....
Is there a simple way to connect the apple monitor to the new mbp or is it done for ?
Otherwise I might go for the 2015 model...

My frustration with the USB C and dongles is all the terminology I had to learn that I didn't (don't) care about before.
And I'm a (non hardware) tech person, so not sure how non tech people will do.

For instance, there's USB A and USB B, and USB B Micro that I need for my hard drive.
The other concern is that all USB C is not created equal. I've tried to read thru Benson Leung's reviews on Amazon but he hasn't really focused on dongles.
For Hard Drives, I've had issues not using the vendor's cords, but WD doesn't have or test or recco any USB C options. I am really surprised WD doesn't have USB C.

So I'm trying to stay with ones that Benson did review well in other categories and Apple's (so I can easily return it). Given the cost, I'm not looking to throw away.

I'm also not thrilled about another connection that I need to keep tight.
I don't think I need to power thru it since I ordered a 15" with lots of ports.

So here's what I ordered or have:
Apple AV - may return it and just plan on using one of my older Apple TVs as a portable connection for the few times I need it (usually trips). Hot Tip: Best Buy sells refurbished older models for less than the AV dongle.
Belkin C to A for printer (should I need to connect to a local printer for offsite project) and flash drives.
Apple C to Lightning cable for my ipad/iphone. My Apple cables don't last as long as others, but hopefully long enough to let the competition catch up.
Belkin C to Ethernet (for when I need to patch into my router).
Cable Matters C to Micro B - Should direct be better than going thru a dongle for my HD. Keeping a watch for what WD offers.

I ordered
That should pretty much cover all my needs. I might pick up a USB Type-C to Female USB Type-A cable from the local electronics store since Aukey did not carry those. I have some pretty good experiences with Aukey since I own their battery pack and 6 port wall charger and their prices were well below those at Apple online store.

Now I just have to figure out a suitable SD card reader :D
