Should have been left as a spiritual sequel with only minor references to the first film.

Ah, Elizabeth Berkley is in it. This could be the next "Showgirls".

I noticed the same thing. I loved "Showgirls". It's one of my all-time favorites. I've never laughed so hard in my life. I have the VIP Editiion. :) It even comes with pasties, a blindfold and shot glasses. I loves me some "Showgirls".

Weird this thread popped up, because my girlfriend was just watching Donnie Darko last night, and we were talking about the sequel, because the director of Donnie Darko never wanted a sequel, to make sure the integrity of the movie is kept. But lo and behold, someone else comes along to ruin that.

i hope that it is only 'loosely' related to the first one.

Richard Kelly didn't sign up for it so I'm guessing this new director doesn't have much to work with and will follow the script of the first one...just replace donnie with his sister and there you go.

I think its going to turn into one of those underground sequels like house on haunted hill 2 etc.

Bless

I love Donnie Darko. Probably one of my top 20 favorite movies.

The sequel I know will suck. The only actor that's the same is Samantha Darko.

This is going to be like the Butterfly Effect II. The first one was interesting, but the 2nd one was absolutely horrible.

Ok, um.......I said "This could be the next 'Showgirls'" to imply a negative connotation. Sorry for the confusion, but I thought it was pretty obvious. Hated that film. :p

No! Donnie Darko is probably my favorite movie ever, and without Richard Kelly this is not going to be well done at all... great, it's going to give the original a bad name, I can feel it now.

Though I feel obligated to see it, seeing as how I've watched donnie darko 16 times since I put it on my iMac...

Wait....what?

I have to agree with the OP: Seriously???

I know this is a cult film, but it still did REALLY poorly at the box office. Granted, it debuted a week before 9-11, which didn't help it much. But even with the Director's Cut re-release years later, the movie has only made a lifetime box-office gross of $1,270,522 (the movie's production cost was about $6,000,000).

Sure, it's probably done better in rentals. But still....

It's not even the same writer/director! Richard Kelly is even disowning it! And it sounds terrible! And the new director is planning on spending $10,000,000 on this!

Who in their right mind would EVER think this is a good idea??

Then you have no sense of humor. ;) It's the funniest thing I've ever seen for all the wrong reasons. I've watched it about 20 times total.

This looks terribly awful. Typical Hollywood s*** trying to leach off a successful first version.
