Don't discard old MBP

    Took old hard drive out of mid 2009 model....replaced with SSD drive... Now a whole new machine!
    100 bucks!

    What about the processor and gpu then?

    Edit: Sorry I just understood what you meant by not discarding.

    He or she means to get rid of, as in to take to Apple to get credit or a recycling center. With an SSD, many computers of that generation are still competent. There are quad core i7's in mobile format with HT that are still competent when compared to today's offerings. The only real downfall is the video card. However, if it were a discreet GPU of the professional variety, it'll still hold itself among the crowd, specifically in certain fields.

    The processor performance landscape hasn't changed much these last few years. The next two releases by Intel will be key info of whether it would be worth to upgrade or not for the independent builder. A QM variety BGA socket processor from Q1-Q2 2012 falls short of the 4770HQ only in onboard graphics performance. The performance difference between single core and multi-core use is minimal at best.
