I have had good luck with Apple Care

Hey everyone! Great website, just discovered it today. Anyway, I bought a 40 gb 4th gen Ipod last July (2004). I own a lot of home electronics and typically don't ever buy extended warranties, probably because I have been quite lucky with most of the items I have purchased. I did buy the Apple Care, however, because I felt it was worth the money considering the fact the iPod is at a much greater risk of getting broken since I always carry it around with me and sometimes use it while excercising.
In March 2005 the click wheel stopped working, and I went back to the store with my Apple Care extended warranty and they gave me a brand new one on the spot. No questions asked. I certainly can't complain about that. The way I see it is the iPod and the warranty cost me almost 500$, but at least I know that the thing will work for at least 2 years. With the amount of time I use the thing, 500$ is not bad for at least 2 years of service.
If I didn't have Apple Care, I would have been in big trouble thats for sure. This is one case where I am glad I payed the extra!

Is Apple Care anything like buying a product replacement warranty from the local BestBuy/Circuit City/Good Guys? At those places, they'll just swap out your unit if pretty much anything at all goes wrong. In my experience, it's been a "no questions asked" replacement deal.

I'm wondering if Apple Care is equally generous, or do you have to give them the product for several weeks to fix. Anybody know?

The above is untrue. For Best Buy, a $50 iPod Performance Service Plan is offerred. You have 30 days to exchange your iPod if something goes wrong. Just like any other time, this will not cover abuse or other damage.

The PSP will NOT replace your iPod after 30 days. Your iPod will be inspected by a Geek Squad agent and have software repaired on site, or if needed, sent to a Best Buy service center for hardware.

Service plans are hit or miss in my opinion. For roughly 10% of the price, I can get most/all my accessories for it and be set. By the time I am ready to replace my iPod, whether it breaks in 14 months or dies in 36, there will be a better iPod out, and I will be glad to move up to the next model. Sure, they work great for some people, but on a product like this, it's best to bypass it.

Beware of iPod Mechanic!!!

Based on a positive article I read, I shipped my iPod to iPod Mechanic for screen replacement over a month ago. I paid them via PayPal over two weeks ago. The only way to contact them is by email, and I get no response that way. BEWARE!!! Don't make the same mistake I did. Never again will I ship to any company without a phone number and without a live person to answer the phone.
