Well I picked up my 2 watches yesterday and all went well. Checked my bank this morning expecting the payment to have have changed from pending to cleared. I was shocked to see the pending payment has disappeared and it has released the money back into my account. Have I got free watches? What’s going on!

This has happened to me and others in the past. Apple will definitely charge you. If there was a temporary pre-authorization charge on your account, they will deduct the money at some point.

When the iPhone 6s launched, there was a pre-authorization charge on my debit card, which I paid in full, then the pre-authorization charge dropped and I received my phone without being charged. Approximately five business days later, I was charged from Apple.

Thanks. My account is being closed on Wednesday so that may be a problem then :-(

Well why didn’t they just take the money in the first place. Very strange to release it back.

It may be a bank thing and not Apple. I have had charges appear and disappear on my accounts. In the end they come back, every time. Maybe you will be lucky but I would not count on it. If you close your account before they get their money, they will find you with no problem. Just leave the funds there until it takes the money.

Thanks. I want them to find me if it doesn’t come out. I’m not a dishonest person.

Yes, exactly. They’d have had a week or more, and that’s their window. My partner had the same thing last year - bought it, had the funds pre-authorised, then had those funds returned and claimed again a few days later.

From Apple’s perspective, that’s an inefficient game to play, at best. From a consumer’s perspective, it could result in all sorts of problems. It’s quite possible that between funds coming back into accounts and Apple taking the payment again, any number of things could happen to cause there to be less funds available than the cost of the (now delivered) product.

What then? Does Apple force the payment through? If that puts the consumer in debt with their bank, perhaps resulting in bank fees, how is that fair when the consumer paid the full amount in good faith at the point of purchase?

Let’s say Apple can’t force the payment through (the card is stopped or account closed). Do you then have a debt with Apple that will affect your credit score? Again, how is that fair when the funds were available to them for a week or more and they neglected to take them?
