When a new mail comes in, it goes to my watch. I can scroll to read it. But how do I mark it as read?

Scrolling to the bottom of the email marks it as read automatically, that's why there's an option to mark it as unread instead.

So if I "clear" a notification (by swiping left, or by clear all force touch), it leaves it as "read"?

No, if you clear them from the notification list, it won't mark it as read. What I meant was if you were reading a mail notification (i.e., tapping on the notification to see the whole message), then it will mark it as read for you, since it assuming you have read the message.

If you just cleared it from the notification list, then it won't make that assumption.

Nope just tested this, notification came in, I tapped it, scrolled to the bottom. Clicked the dismiss button. Mail is still kept unread.

In fact, you can verify this right away, by going into the Mail app. You will see your inbox with the mail marked as unread. Also verified by looking at my macbook.

Weird, I tested it with a couple emails from work earlier today, and I thought it worked that way. Now I'm confused.

Yea super confusing that's why I had to ask on the forum. Never with an Apple product, do I have to ask how to use it lol.

Maybe it's to do with the kind of email accounts? I'm testing with an icloud account.

I just tried it with my iCloud. Doesn't work right. I feel like the "Mark as unread" button is wrong and should be the other way around.

I think they meant "Mark as read"

On my watch, from the inbox list, I swipe on an email, tap the "..." button (next to trash can), and im presented with "flag" and "mark as read" options. This will properly propagate down to my iPhone.

Opening the email message and force-pressing on the text will pop up a Flag, trash can and a check mark (mark as read). Also appears to go to then mark as read on my phone.

Reading the pop-up notification, however, and tapping Dismiss does not mark the message as read. Mark As Unread, as expected, also does not mark the message as read.

Seems one has to go in to the email app on the phone specifically and read the message there to have it marked as read on the phone.

Which makes no sense, why would you have "mark as unread" as an option? When there is no way to mark it as read?

Agreed. Rolling down to the bottom should mark it as read. Maybe time to file a bug report with Apple...
