I was wondering if anyone can advise the 'best' way to play these games on a G4 Cube (450MHz) running 10.4 Tiger. I just tried installing them using an early version of Boxer, but they were so slow as to be unplayable. I managed to find a port of Quake II that works on Tiger natively, but am struggling to find anything for Doom or the original Quake (everything commercial seems to be for Mac Classic rather than OSX.)

You might find my PPC Mac gaming thread of interest. :)

Page 2 contains recommendations of Doom and (GL)Quake versions that run under OS X. Enjoy. ;)

Edit: pipped to the post by @Amethyst1 but the various Doom versions mentioned and evaluated in my thread are still worth checking out.

Great thanks, Fruitz of Dojo runs Quake really well. I have been trying PrBoom for Doom and it seems good, might try Doom Legacy later.

How about Dark Forces? I had a look on Macintosh Garden but all the links were for Mac Classic versions (in fact I think I alreadty have it installed in OS9 but it obviously doesn't run well in Classic mode, and I don't boot up OS 9 very often.

Also discussed on Page 2. ;)

Speaking of First Person Shooters, Dark Forces also requires OS 9 for the best results. It does run under Classic but the frame tearing and sluggishness makes it effectively unplayable.

There appears to be a more recent macOS re-release available on Steam but it requires Mavericks as a minimum, which well and truly excludes it from running on a PPC Mac. :D

Yes I had a read of your thread, I thought maybe three years later there might be an OSX version. Shame that it seems to be Intel only.

Another game I thought of, is there a way to play Lemmings in OSX Tiger?

Thanks, but they are all for OS 9 or earlier. I tried running Lemmings in Classic on OS X, but it's not very nice.

Hmm, as you do have Classic installed, isn't booting to OS 9 an option? I realize it's not the perfect solution, but it would give you a lot more fully native support for older games.

Hmm, you could play the Snes Lemmings cart rom through a console emulator like sens9x in OSX.
That's a good suggestion, although my Cube is only a 450 so SNES games don't run very smoothly. I'll give Lemmings a try though.

Not sure if you saw my other thread, but the problem with that is the Cube has no audio out so I use a FireWire audio interface to connect to my speakers, and there are no OS 9 drivers for the device. So basically I have no sound in <OS X. I don't have the original USB speakers, and they are rubbish anyway.

Well apparently, one of these will solve that problem: Sabrent Aluminum USB External Stereo Sound Adapter for Windows and Mac. Plug and Play No Drivers Needed [Black] (AU-EMCB)

The only limitation, according to this reddit thread, is that it won't have a chime. .

You can get the latest open source engine versions of both for PowerPC Macs (As well as Intel & M1) here...

Enjoy!

Yes I've tried one of those cheap generic USB sound cards, it didn't sound great to be honest (virtually no bass) and also I like the FW interface because it has a volume control knob on it so I don't have to mess around with individual apps (as any kind of sound card disables the volume control on OS X.) So I want to keep the one I have really.
