    Guys,
    Has anyone on this forum put together a do's and don’ts for an unlocked iPhone so that we can keep them unlocked and usable? I have one arriving next week here in Thailand and I don’t want to mess it up as soon as I fire it up.
    Any help advice will be much appreciated

    Hi, Sad to see no one else has helped;

    if it is arriving unlocked, then, quite simply DON'T UPDATE in iTunes, it is quite likeley that when you plug it in you will be asked to update firmware, click no/never ask again.

    while it is very tempting to update firmware, the way i look at the matter is:
    you bourght an iPhone cos its amazing, how ever good firmware will make it, your iPhone wont get worse, it may just fall behind the new software... however old the software, its going to be the most amazing phone you have ever used.

    if you wish you can install custom apps, personally i like mine to look as apple standard as possible, but there are some apps which can be installed by some free programs for both mac and pc, which will allow you to put things such as custom designs and msn etc.

    remember, if you skrew everything up, you can generally do a restore, and if this fails, there will always be people willing to help.

    if your iPhone arrives locked, head over to modmyifone.com for tutorials on unlocking, depending on the software on your phone already there will be different options available for you.

    have fun, and if you havent ever used an iPhone before... it really is somthing very very special, i have been a user for 4 weeks, and with most gadgets the 'shine' wares off after a few days, but with this, every morning... i get that same fantastic 'wow' feeling

    the basic rule; DON'T UPDATE THE SOFTWARE, you can look on forums to see it its safe to, but usally updates trash iPhones untill hackers break them again.

    any more questions, do ask!

    Great, thanks for the info, I am still waiting for the phone to arrive, I will let you know how I get on with it, from what I have seen on this board it looks like the iPhone reacts similar to an iPod when you put it on the dock, iTunes opens and sync's what you have set up in preferences; contacts, photos, music and as long as I don’t do a update I should be ok right?
    Thanks again for taking the time to reply, I am Mac user friendly, but the iPhone is something very new to me as here in Thailand Apple have not done a launch yet that is why I went with the unlocked phone

    yeh, assuming you do get an unlocked one, i think you have to give it an name, and set it up just like an iPod, the tabs are very easy for setting things like contacts etc.

    What can i do with iTunes and my unlocked iPhone?

    HI, I just unlocked my 16gig iphone and it was a snap thanks to ziphone. Unreal. Thanks guys. Now, I need to know how to protect it from itunes. What can I do and what can´t I do. I know enough not to update firmware, but can i sink song and video that I already have? Am I allowed to buy music online or is that out as well. I just wan to know how to protect the phone from becoming a brick, any list of dos and don'ts would sure be great! Thanks in advance!

    yes you can sync songs and videos from your itunes, and you can buy music online as well. other than don't upgrade/downgrade firmware without know what you're doing, you can probably do everything else with it. I also have an unlocked phone and it's working fine.
