I think it would depend on what the battery is rated too really. I'm not an engineer so anyone who knows more about this can correct me if I am wrong.

I race RC Cars and with a good charger and high rated battery you can get 3000+ mAh back in the battery in a little bit more than 10 minutes time no problem. This is using LiPo batteries.

Yupp at a 6.7c (10amp) charge rate a 1.5Ah battery would take 10 minutes to charge. I would probably say 5c would be wise for battery safety since lipo batteries can be dangerous. I have found some that can go up 15c which would be 22.5 amps for a 1.5Ah battery and a 4 minute charge time as long as you have an RC hobby style charger that can handle it. I am thinking the back would have a completely separate low profile plug that would connect directly to the battery.

While I'd prob never adopt the double battery life mod given by the OP, he's definitely sparked my interest. I own a mophie and I would love to rip that thing open and attempt to double its battery life.

Check out the start of version two, I went ahead and put it in the first post.

Thanks man!:) I have done cooler stuff, just nothing with a device that half of the people in the world own! haha

Good work! I like version 2 as its a sleeker and clean.

As far as iPhones are concerned you just gave a dude on China a new idea.

Thank me later, get a PATENT ASAP!

btw check out the stats on the mobile subscribers in the world and the number of iPhones available :). there's always a market until it gets saturated, but it's never as big as you imagine it.

i like the sound of the charger idea. not being rude but the extra batt pack is a great idea but i am always near my phone charger. its a great idea though and you should start selling some of this stuff $129 to expensive for me. if you could make it for about half of that you would be making good money.

I've seen it, not really a fan. It doesn't mesh well either in my opinion. The hope with this project, is he'll get it to fit in a tad better, maybe even have the price a bit more reasonable lol.

That one would look a bit better perhaps anodized black. Looks
wise it's actually pretty nice though and doesn't seem to be too thick.
I agree the price is a bit high but I'm sure there making small batches
which would necessitate higher prices.

Yeah, a smooth glassy black coating at least would mesh better. That is just.. Well, blah looking. For that much and that half ***** looking that I would do it myself (I'm super cheap lol).

iThink I have an idea for the back casing making it fit better with the iPhone design.

i'm gonna try to do a 3D mockup of it i will post it later on.

Hey guys sorry I have been super busy with school!

----------

How long does your battery last?

It lasts a little longer than twice the original since the battery never gets hot while discharging fast while playing a demanding game. I got 22 hours of usage the first time I tested while most of that was playing video.

----------

I'm interested in doing a similar thing for my 3gs just looking over the battery. Do I need to take apart the battery packs and solder the cells together or is it just a matter of soldering the pins together of the batteries before they connect to the motherboard?

This image shows the battery so do i just solder + pin to + and - to -?

I just stripped the battery circuitry off one of the batteries and then soldered both to one battery circuit in parallel like you described right at the battery terminals.

Having trouble. I stripped off a battery. There are like 2 foil tabs. I'm not seeing how its possible to solder these foil strips of the 2 batteries together :/

Here is the battery.

Hi OSUengineer love your work. Do you have any updates ? I'm interested in your work. May I purchase some from you ? I would love to hear from you ASAP! Thanks for your proof of concept I hope to hear from you with an update.

for someone who wants to make a quick bucks. book a ticket to china and tell them to produce jumbo battery for iPhone and a compatible back cover. why there is no people doing this?

LOL.. :D

It's not THAT easy. When marketing/creating a new product there are several factors and variables to consider.

So you just stacked two batteries together and soldered them into parallel? How's the battery life looking?

I would ask the same question, i so want, oh my god, you cant imagine, how much i WANT to do the same to my next new phone, apple or samsung i dont know yet. Is it that easy? just connecting batteries parallely together? im thinking 3 total... : D

looks really ugly to me.

Have you ever seen an extended battery case that doesn't look ugly? LOL I haven't. But to most, being able to use the phone trumps the look of the phone... haha, I almost was able to say that with a straight face.

Here you go! I wanted to shrink rap the inside but I was a little too excited.

Funny how someone smart enough to be an "OSU Engineering Student" can come up with an external battery mod, yet can't come up with a sentence written following proper English spelling and grammar. hehe. #AMERICAOWNEDBYTHECHINESE.

I think we all knew what he meant..
