Ok, so I'm sure it is an awful coincidence but I'm going to put it out there anyway (vent!).

I have an iMac 27" 2017 4.2 GHz i7 32 GB Ram, Studio Display connected via thunderbolt and into the display, a G-Raid 8 TB Thunderbolt 3 (connected via the USB-C) and a G-Drive 8 TB (also connected via the USB-C). These are going into the Studio Display separately, not being daisy chained.

Yesterday I upgraded macOS to 12.4 and the Studio Display to firmware 67.1.

Since then when I try to mount the G-Raid I get an error message stating that macOS cannot repair the disk and it cannot be written to, only read. The G-Drive currently does not mount even though I've previously had this message and it can be "seen" in the system information as a USB connected device to the Studio Display.

I have also tried plugging them into my MacBook Air M1 running 12.4 and a MacBook Air i5 running 12.3.1, same issue occurs.

Is this just unfortunate that both these devices have failed at the same time, or could there be a bigger issue here?

Thanks

K

It's possible, but it seems like the chances of two drives failing at the exact same time (not just within a short time of each other, but literally at the same time) from "natural causes" are very slim. Have you tried plugging either drive directly into your iMac's USB ports or another Mac's?

Sounds like they should have been disconnected from the display before the Firmware update......🤔

For the drive which still mounts open the "Get Info" in Finder, expand the "Sharing & Permissions" section, then click the lock to authenticate. Check "Ignore ownership on this volume".

What filesystem are you using on this two drives? How far does First Aid process?

Yeah tried two other Macs, same issue.

For future purchases, if you have two identical hard drives then the chance of them failing at the same time is higher than when you are using different ones.

This option is already checked.

Here is a screenshot of first aid run on the G-Raid. The G-Drive was my Time Machine Back Up.

Understood, but these drives were purchased a year apart.

Ran into the same thing with the upgrade to 12.4 after upgrading my 2018 Mini, 2 small USB-A WD pocket drives did not work when I tried to run a Time Machine Backup on the Mini. Both drives had severe issues with Disk Utility and both also failed when trying them on my Mac Studio.

Funny thing was as a last ditch effort, I plugged them into the computer I used to format them. And suddenly they had zero issues and a clean bill of health from Disk Utility. Even though it also was running MacOS 12.4

Ended up pulling the files I need off of both drives using a thumb drive and putting them on the Mac Studio as a 2nd backup.

Looked at the one it worked on, and I had already checked the "ignore ownership" on the drive, yet it seems to still be owned by the one Mac.
