I do utility survey work in the streets, I am constantly looking for discarded Macs. My last career was EMS, so for the last 34 years I have been driving around the streets. In all that time the only discarded Macs I found were a 6100 and 7100 in the late 90's.
Today I spied a silver Mac tower, I could see it was a G5. It was next to a dumpster in a renovation site, I asked the workers and they said "enjoy". There was a pile of stuff and under the G5 was a 17" acrylic display. This was obviously out in the weather and the inner plastic air deflector and HD were missing. Not expecting much.
Not even a block away I see a weathered 24" aluminum iMac out by a recycle bin but not on the sidewalk. More renovation, more "enjoy".
They both booted!
G5: Powermac 7,3 Dual 2.0, 3.5GB ram, refurb.
iMac: 2009 2.93 C2D. Missing the glass screen cover, and the LCD is destroyed.

Very nice find!

That G5 consumes a LOT of power so if you pay for your own hydro/electric bill you're going to feel the cost of ownership - yes it's significant. Had one a few years back and sold it. Amazing kit and decent internet use even today all things considering as many sell on kijiji for under $200CAN.

iMac that's a good find.

You must have used up most of your PPC luck for now! :D Both of those are super great finds, the best thing I've found is a Pro Keyboard.

Nice finds! :D

I was on a walk tonight, and saw out of the corner of my eye a group of electronic devices, one of which an iMac G3 Snow!

Sadly, as I walked closer, I realized that whoever put it on the curb very clumsily threw it there, leaving the screen detached from the case, and it cracked and shattered. Knowing it was not worth the trouble to touch it much to look further, I took my keys and opened the RAM door and snagged two sticks of RAM, a 256 MB and a label-less one. All is not lost, I suppose.

That’s a sad sight. No doubt it just needed a little attention before it got the life beaten out of it.

That's sad, what a waste of a G3! There aren't too many of those anymore!

Funny how you can pick out a Mac in a pile of trash from a block away.

I have an eye for Apple products. ;D
It was across the street, but among other black and grey TVs and stuff. So not too hard to pick out. :p
