I just replaced my netgear g router with an offbrand one that is capable of N and my download speeds doubled on my iphone 3gs going form 6-7mbs to 12-14 mbs. Upload is the same with both routers. How is this possible? I thought the iphone 3gs was not equipped with an N compatible wireless chip. My computer upload speeds have only increased by 50% and it does have an N compatible wireless card.

Probably your router. I have an old linksys and just got cable his weekend and did a speedtest on my iPhone. Maxed out at 14mbps

Yup, newer routers usually equals better firmware. And I doubt the firmware was upgraded on the old router.

The one thing we can be sure of is that it has nothing to do with the new router's wireless-N capabilities. A new B/G router would also probably have had the same effect. The iPhone does not have a chip capable of receiving draft-N signals.

    Optimum?

interesting, the firmware had been upgraded but the router was old and dropped out frequently. Happy I did, plus the new one was only $30.

Now I'm wondering if I'll get better speed buying a new router.

I've been using the same Linksys WRT54G with Firmware Version: v1.00.7(never updated) for over 3 years. Never had any problems, but out of curiosity I might give a new router a try.

My iphone can only dowload at about 5-6 mbps on my connection. When all of my wired & wireless computers in my house get my full 18 mbps. I would believe the device responsible for the slow down is my iphone.

I have uverse and I'm using the 2-wire that comes with it.

Also at work my boss has comcast, my iphone only gets about 7-8mbps on that connection, when its normally about 22mbps.

MY iPhone speed test is usually 1-3 Mbps lower than when I do a speed test on my laptop. The upload is usually the same though.

My iPhone gets about the same 13 Mbps that my MacBook gets.

Some(read: most) older routers have a very low WAN-LAN throughput, and some might even have a lower WAN-WIFI throughput. that 54Mbps is for your internal network, so even though your internet connection was fast enough, I doubt your router had the oomph to handle it. Now that you hacve a fancy new wireless N router, your speeds increased not due to the wireless N part, but rather because the router is more powerful in general.
