I just recently (and stupidly) upgraded my phone to version 3.0. After realizing what I had done I have attempted to downgrade back to 2.2.1. I have tried restoring with downloaded versions of 2.2 and 2.2.1 by option clicking restore in itunes after putting my iphone in DFU mode. However no matter what i try i always receive error (21). additionally i cant get quickpwn to recognize my phone. Whats going on? Any suggestions? Have destroyed my phone for good? Please help. thank you for your help.

Don't forget to ask Apple for your money back!

    ....oh wait.

The baseband has been updated, there is no way to go back (the documentation is pretty clear about this).

for anyone whos interested i discovered a way to downgrade from 3.0 that i havent seen on any other threads, worked for me:
i set my phone to DFU mode and plugged it into my friends computer running vista. it attempted to restore my iphone to 1.1.4 but failed. then i plugged my phone back into my mbp, option clicked restore and manually installed 2.2.1. worked like a charm. Im staying away from amateur beta testing from now on. (and Dbell, i was asking for advice not a scolding why are you commenting in this thread just to tell me that i broke my phone. If i wanted a finger wagged in my face i would have asked my mom for advice not the macrumors thread page.)

You can downgrade to 2.2.1 easily from 3.0.

Just connect it to Pwnage tool. Follow the steps to put custom 2.2.1 firmware on there. Bam! 2.2.1 custom.

Then if you do not want your phone jailbroken just restore it in iTunes by clicking restore. It will restore it to the normal Apple 2.2.1 software. The baseband will still be the 3.0 baseband but this makes no difference.

You are now back to 2.2.1. :apple:

Doesn't work, iTunes won't restore it if you just click on restore (I tried this.) I think since you are running the new 4.20 baseband and it doesn't match the 2.2 or 2.2.1 baseband then it sees the error and won't let you restore... or something like that.

Actually, its not seeing an upgraded baseband that fails it. Its the fact that it fails to downgrade the baseband through normal means. You have to scheme it for it to work...should have just been a legit developer in the first place...

    tested how it works.

    1.DFU and restore on 3.0(again)
    2.DFU and restore on 2.0
    3.DFU and restore on 2.2.1
    4.quickpwn(no pwnagetool but QUICKPWN)

worked for me on my EDGE...

    super tip...

DFU mode has no itunes logo or cable usb on screen but is totaly BLACK
recovery mode has those images on screen but recovery mode is useless to us for downgrading
