What an untrue statement. There is nothing subpar about it the M4 Pro’s. No defects either.

I have owned all the 12.9 previous Pro’s and the M4 is way better than any of them. There is no comparison. No way could I go backwards now, as too big of a decrease going to an older Pro over the M4. I have tested both the glossy oled screen and nano and liked them both. Kept the nano, but would be fine with either.

Gave the glossy oled to my 81 old dad, who was using a 4th generation iPad Pro 12.9 and he loves the glossy oled M4 13 Pro. He said reading text on it is so much crisper and much brighter/better colors.

OP - do OLED TV’s do the same to your eyes?
So not true. As someone who uses iPad for media consumption and loved the sound of it I immediately regretted getting the new model. The sound is awful compared to the 2020 12.9 IPad Pro. While indeed the screen is amazing I returned it and went with a used IPad Pro M2. They sure have downgraded the sound a lot with the new ones and is clearly subpar of the older ones.

Still disagree. No issue with the sound.

No issue for you and of course I respect that as every man has different needs. But you cannot deny that the previous had better sound. It’s all a matter of physics slimmer body less space for the speakers to give the quality they used to.
For me mini led on 13 pro M2 is already good enough as I am more picky on the sound. For you the screen deference between mini led and Oled is more important and is understandle.

Yeah sound is average on M4 v M1, especially 11", 13" M4 is closer but still not as good.

What's laughable is paying all that money for a upgrade and getting worse speakers lol 2018- 2024 ;)
I have a 13” M1 Pro and its speakers are mediocre compared to my 16” MBP. I almost exclusively use a BT speaker when listening to music on my iPad so speaker quality is way down on my list of features I would upgrade for; screen quality, performance, and weight reduction would be more important to me.

Now if the speakers are the only iPad feature you care about then it probably is a downgrade.

I guess sound is subjective, personally the only comparison I make is at full volume, I don't care how the volume is mapped at intermediate levels as I can always turn it up or down. In terms of volume and "fullness" the M4 13 is extremely close to the M4, which was a big improvement over the previous generations. The difference M1 vs older 12.9 models is definitely noticeable, the difference M1 vs M4 is negligeable.
When I compared the M1 to the 2018 I assumed that it was louder and fuller because it was thicker, but I when got the M4 I was amazed that a device now much thinner has virtually the same volume and fullness as the M1 and is much better than the non mini-led models.
I cannot speak for the smaller M4 model as I only have until M1 11" (and the 11" is on very different level in terms of volume).

I wonder what % of the population suffers from this issue with OLED? I would bet it’s at least 5-10%+, and I would bet, people are living with eye strain and don’t know it, they have grown use to the discomfort
My eyes relax more since I got an oled tv. The higher contrast makes it easier to see detail and I’m not constantly wondering whether the raised black is a creative choice or the backlight showing through. I’m guessing the PWM in the iPad screen is the real problem in this instance, flickering does cause discomfort for many people, myself included.

5-10% getting symptoms from oled would be from hundreds of millions to over a billion people globally and such a significant number in any market that it would seriously hurt oled sales.

The M1 iPad Pro’s Pro screens have a defect called blooming. For the 11-inch model, it’s specifically the backlight (full-screen blooming) that can’t produce black levels.

If you’re an audiophile, you wouldn’t find the onboard speakers on the M1 iPad Pro to be suitable for listening to music in any case.

The M4 iPad Pro is lighter too and has a superior new Apple keyboard and pencil.

Also the grainy display issue on the OLED iPads and the PWM issues.

If you are a bit of an audiophile and like to use external DACs (sabre ess, burr brown chips etc), then you will probably prefer the audio on the M4 iPP’s (inc. 11”) as there is more emphasis on lows, mids, highs and instrumental separation due to less bass/treble from the thinner chassis (flatter EQ). The previous iPP models have a bit more bass/treble due to thicker body, which in general is more appealing to the majority of consumers (more V shaped EQ).

There’s nothing subpar about the M4 Pro? If you don’t think that the speakers are subpar then I don’t know what to tell you. Huge downgrade from the 2018 Pro.
Same could be said for the 2018 iPad Pro. My 10.5 ipp’s speakers were far better than my 2018 12.9’s speakers

There isn’t anything wrong with the speakers on either size of the m4 - I have both with no issues

I don’t understand a thing that repeatedly is mentioned in this discussions.
There is the argument that the XX iPad has way/far/extremly better sound than the YY iPad.
But if you are so into music, if you are an audiofile, then the idea of listening to an iPad is an abhorrent anomaly?
Am I missing something?
If you want propper sound, you get some nice can’s or a decent amplifier and boxes. But listening to an iPad for a good audio experience?!?
Odd.

it's simple to understand. the speakers on an iPhone 16 are much better than those of an iPhone 3GS, would you agree?

we aren't looking for sound that approaches perfection coming out of our iPads. But we all noticed that if you have them side-by-side, the m4 iPad 13" is a downgrade from the previous generations of 12.9/13" iPads.

Serious much better?
Much better is a good pair of Grado headphones. Beyer Dynamics, many brands offer that. A nice pair of Kef’s.
I’m old, my hearing isn’t what it used to be, but an iPad is never much better.

Yes. It can be a lot worse, Apple is doing its best, but physics are a set of laws you can’t push aside.
So stop whining about the absolute minimal differences and go to a shop and listen to some nice cans or boxes and wonder why you make such a fuss about absolute minimal differences.

The new iPads might not sound as good as the previous ones, but there is nothing "perfection" about iPad speakers.

Indeed we are not looking for perfection but I prefer watching movies in the M2 iPad Pro than the M4. I don’t know M4 sounds off to me. And with IPad Os I don’t have any other use for the iPad than watching movies on the go as I still need a Mac for my work as IPad Os does not cut it. So I completely understand the sound argument.
