How much easier does it have to be?

Don't download a beta on your main device.

No. Simple download the 9.3.2 ISPW and restore through iTunes.

Will the old itunes backup work if we upgrade to 10 beta, then downgrade via ipsw file and restore

I was able to downgrade by Holding Option-> Check for update-> then pointing it at the downloaded 9.3.2 IPSW. This was on a 6S and everything went back to how i had it before updating to iOS10
