Can I downgrade from iOS 18 Beta to iOS 17 without losing all of my data? (I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max, and I want to try the ne software update..)
Im hovering above the 'install now' button and I don't know what to do..

Yes you would need to back up first then if you want to revert you would put your iPhone into dfu mode and then restore via a pc or Mac

If my mac doesnt have enough space but i have a ssd, would I be able to backup on the ssd?
If so, how would I do that?

I'v seen some eople say that its possible to go back only for a few days from when the beta came out and the you'd have to wait for the official update to release. Is it true? And is it safe usually to update to the beta this early?

Seriously, don't waste your time installing a DB1 from a major release on your main phone. We all know it will be buggy enough to the point a downgrade will be necessary. Only install it if you have other devices less important than your phone only for testing purposes.

It’s not possible to roll back on device level or hasn’t been possible up until now. Personally if you’ve not tried beta testing before I’d wait patiently until beta 2/3 or public beta 1 if it’s your main device.

To be honest, if you’re asking these types of questions you shouldn’t even bother. You’ll be on the beta for a while and there’s literally nothing groundbreaking about iOS18.

I back up directly to my synology nas as my Mac doesn't have enough space. I would imagine it would work the same with an external ssd. I just gave terminal full disk access, then created a symlink from the mobile backup location to my nas setup.

Typical Apple bs & lack of care .... there is no way I can downgrade to iOS 17 from iOS 18 public beta (sorry I wanted to take a peek now). iPhone 15 Pro Max [you'd think I'd paid enough to get a little professionalism from Apple].

Mac Sonoma keeps trying to install an update to phone, but fails every time;
Finder cannot reinstall iOS 17 backup & indicating that Find My needs to be disabled on the phone (which it is);
As per the recovery instructions provided here & elsewhere, the Phone refused to do this as well.

More garbage & lack of support from Apple.

iOS 18 beta doesn't interact properly with Sonoma, you need to either be on macOS Sequoia beta or have Xcode installed if you're on Sonoma to fix that. That could be the cause of some of your issues. Also you can't update to iOS 17 from 18, you need to completely erase and restore the phone from your Mac. If you successfully enter recovery mode it won't ask about Find My. To get to recovery mode you must keep holding the button even after the Apple logo comes up until the screen changes to the image of a computer.

Maybe try Apple's instructions: https://support.apple.com/en-us/108763

What? You blame apple because things aren't working as you expected from being part of a beta version? Wow. For years you have to install Xcode to make your phone being recognized with the current macOS if the phone is on a major release ahead. The process is still very simple though. If you don't know how to downgrade or you expect to have no problems when installing a pre-release OS, maybe betas aren't for you.

Apple configurator app restores (downgrades) just fine. Huat plug your phone in, trust your device, and right click and restore.

That failed update is the MobileDevice.pkg that you install from an Xcode.

I tried iOS 18 b2 and downgraded to iOS 17.5.1 just fine using my MBP 14 on Sonoma. Made a couple encrypted backups before upgrading to iOS 18 so was able to go back to the way my 13P was. Zero issues.

How is you running a beta Apple‘s fault? It says several times to back up your data when you join the beta program and again when you download the beta software. I don’t care about defending a multi-trillion dollar company but stop being stupid then getting mad at others for your own stupidity.

You cannot restore a backup to iOS17 that you took in iOS18.
You should have made the backup in iOS17 and safeguarded the iCloud backup by renaming the phone, or archiving the backup in your Mac.

Downgraded from 18 beta to 17.... other than Satellite messaging which I will probable never use and probable will be buggy like most new apple "features", i found 18 to be annoying... the moving around of interface elements, change for change sake, but mainly the totally stupid new Photos app which adds nothing and causes me to have relearn gestures is sad.
