Damn, no one reasonably is biting on craigslist. And if they are they seem to be lowballing me, at least in my mind.

Mac2Sell says my iMac is worth $1160 CAD but everyone is offering in the ~$800 range. What's up with that? Is the Mac2Sell estimate wrong? What do you guys think my iMac is worth (in CAD if preferably but you can also put a USD amount to it and I'll just convert it)?

I think $900 is pretty fair... maybe $1000 on a good day. Check prices on eBay for confirmation. Keep in mind that we're in a recession, so resale values are already a bit lower than they would be normally.

In 2007 I bought a 24" iMac. Last year I got an aluminium MacBook to complement the iMac. To cut a long story short: I sold the iMac late last year and kept the MacBook. I, too, thought it would be good to have two Macs, but it turned out to be more of a hassle than it was convenient. The MacBook does everything my iMac did. Plus, the space won because of the desk I got rid of is invaluable.

...actually, with the addition of the iMac that makes 5 computers in my house:

1. Dell desktop 8100 P4 1.3 Ghz w/ 768 MB of RDRAM - 10+ yrs old in excellent shape but slow

2. Toshiba 1905-s303 laptop P4 2.4 Ghz w/ 768 MB of RAM - 8+ yrs old in excellent shape but slow

3. Sony PCG-TR3A Centrino 1 Ghz w/ 1 GB of RAM - 6 yrs old and still going fairly strong!

4. Asus eeePC1000H 1.6 Ghz Atom w/ 2 GB of RAM - 1 year old, its a great portable netbook, but still a netbook in terms of power

5. Apple iMac 20" 2.4 Ghz w/ 4 GB of RAM - still NIB have to set this puppy up!

*** waiting for notebooks to get more powerful before adding any more machines to my house... didn't want a mini and didn't want to spend the $$ on a Mac Pro...

Heh, that's quite a lot of computers there. Do you use them all? Will you be getting rid of any of them once you get a newer Mac laptop? ...

...the Dell 8100 is used daily or everyother day by my wife for her "basic" work putting together schoolwork for the kids she teaches, the Toshiba - its pretty much a guest computer for when friends come over and want to surf the net so they're not on one of my main machines, the Sony is my arm chair laptop in the living room and gets used daily, the eeePC is my throw around at work when I have to connect a USB drive (not allowed on our work PC's)... if I get a MB/MBP down the road the Toshiba would probably go and the Sony would probably go to guest use... the Dell is getting connected to my HDTV this weekend as well.

Ugh. Well for the time being the plan to downgrade has been stalled. I'm getting ridiculously low offers for my iMac. Might as well just keep it for now.

:(

But then again maybe this is a blessing in disguise. This forces me to wait till Snow Leopard and maybe some newer Mac laptops.

I live off just a laptop, it is great. All of my files are on one machine (that doesn't mean to say they aren't backed up somewhere), so when ever i go anywhere with my laptop, i know i have what i need on it. The only problem is though, it can get a bit annoying not being able to play many games on my laptop (the graphics card is too low, and ram isn't high enough)

I used to always have a Mac tower and a laptop, and 3 years ago decided to move only to laptop. I have a MBP with a Cinema Display and Bluetooth keyboard/mouse. At home feels like a desktop, and then I have the flexibility to be mobile when I need. I also use my iTouch for Facebook and e-mail when I'm on the couch, plus a remote for my Apple TV. I'd say lose the desktop and buy a screen. I have always had great luck using eBay to sell my Macs. Bids always start low, but then right before the end they skyrocket and I've actually been surprised how much I got as sometimes the final sale price was close to a newer model refurb!

...To those of you who only own a laptop and use it as your main machine: Do you regret only having a laptop? How is only having a laptop working out for you?...

I don't regret it at all. A laptop has been my main/only machine since 2001, and having a display, keyboard and mouse at home has been working great for me.

Only remember, always have BACKUP: laptops are always getting stolen or malfunctioning.
