Hey guys,

I recently got a iPhone 3GS, cz my other phone was broken. So, I thought of updating it, since it hadn't been updated before. After its iOS was updated to 6.1.3, it said that my SIM card is not supported under the activation policy. So, I went ahead and jailbroke it. But it was only tethered jailbreak. And I also noticed that the phone was slow and its battery life was bad.

So, now I was wondering how I can downgrade it to 4.1, since thats the only SHSH blob that I have. I tried going to redsn0w and restoring it, but it goes to recovery mode after.

Basically, my question is, how do I downgrade a tethered jailbroken iPhone 3GS from 6.1.3 to 4.1?

Any help on this would be awesome. Thanks!

DFU mode and restore to 4.1, you can download the ipsw from iclarified. Apple still signs iOS 4.1 for the 3GS, so SHSH aren't needed.

@PsstGreek, I have the ipsw. I tried downgrading it, it says it was successful, and then the iPhone goes to recovery mode, and i have to use my iTunes to restore it, which puts it back to 6.1.3 again.

doesn't seem to work, I clicked "exit recovery". The screen goes blank, then the apple logo appears for a while, and the phone restarts and goes back to recovery mode.

What I did was:
- Used redsn0w, went to even more and in restore, selected 4.1 ipsw
- Put iphone to DFU mode, and started to restore.
- after the restore was complete, it goes to recovery mode.

should I use another program than redsn0w?

I had the same exact recovery problem as you (upon 3GS downgrade to 4.1) and was stuck on it for a couple hours (TinyUmbrella and Recboot wouldn't fix it), but I finally figured it out.

The answer to your question is yes, use iREB. It has a "Recovery Mode Loop Fixer" that fixes this.

I realize that OP may not necessarily still be interested in this, but this thread came up in my Googling and was my exact situation, so I wanted to put the answer in, or at least the solution for me.

Hey i have same problem, i downgrade from iOS 6.1.6 to iOS 4.1, and iTunes give my 1015 error. Normal becouse of the baseband. But it's normal that with tiny umbrella, RecBoot or iReb it exit from recovery mode, but my iPhone 3GS don't exit. I try in every 5 3gs that i have (I want to put them in exposition with the older iOS i can), but they don't exit from recovery mode. I also try with iReb like you bug it doesn't work. I try in all my Macintosh, and i also try in Windows virtual machine. Did you know what can i do? Sorry for my english but i'm italian.

I've taken my 3GS from 5.1.1 to 6.1.3 then down to 4.1 then up to 5.1.1 in the last year after getting it back from my brother and repairing screen/replacing battery. Here are my quick notes from the process if it helps you:

Used iFaith-v1.5.9 to save blobs for unsigned iOS versions mentioned BEFORE upgrading.

Was able to restore 3GS to 5.1.1 from 6.1.6 by entering DFU mode (Power + Home for 10 seconds, then let go of Power Button and keep holding Home for 10 seconds) with tinyumbrella-7.04.00.exe running with server button in it clicked. Also had redsn0w_win_0.9.15b3 running when I entered DFU, BOTH IN ADMINISTRATOR. I may have entered PWND DFU mode with it open. So with Redsn0w, TinyUmbrella 7.04 (and its TSS Server on) running as admin I Shift Key + Clicked Restore in iTunes 12, chose 000000CFBA19D54C_iFaith_iPhone_3GS-5.1.1_(9B206)_signed.ipsw, and it restored as normal and used Bell SIM to activate.

I went from 5.1.1 to 4.1 but got stuck in Plug into iTunes screen. To get out of that post 4.1 install using the above method I just used redsn0w_win_0.9.15b3's extras mode to exit restore loop.

I've try with iFaith to create a custom ipsw with shsh that the programm give me from cydia (it seems that who had this 3gs had jailbroken iphone). I've try with iOS 4.1, in DFU, but iTunes gives me 1600, 1604, 2005 error. The same with custom iOS 5.1.1 ipsw. Why? How can i do? Now thai i have shsh can i downgrade normaly from iTunes? How? I'am on Windows virtual machine, there is a metod for MacOS ? I also have iOS 4.0 shsh, boe can i downgrade on Mac? Tell me how can i downgrade in Mac or Windows..

I'm not sure. I used an actual windows machine with the methods and versions described above. I was able to exit the iTunes logo recovery loop with the redsnow version listed, if you can find that version it might help you. Other than that I can't provide much else sorry, I didn't wind up having to do much troubleshooting since it worked easily for me.
