Is there any way to download an OS update independantly. I keep forgetting my iPhone cable when I have access to internet.

You can download the ipsw from the internet to the computer but how do you plan on updating your iphone firmware without a cable?
Its not gonna happen.

Keep in mind you have to be able to contact Apple's server to verify the firmware before you can restore, so you'll still need Internet to restore even if you have the ipsw downloaded.
