Hello All,

My AppleTV is coming today and i have a questions about streaming speeds. We have high-speed, but slow to most of what you have (we live in a small town on a farm, so no cox or qwest for us out here), 1 mps to 2 mps. It takes about 6 hours to download a HD movie, I would thinking streaming will take just as long.

Those of you who have streamed a movie or TV show, how long does it take to buffer? What other observation do you have to share! Thanks!!!!

Jeff

Do the math.

8 bits in a byte.

~1000 megabits in a gigabit.

1-2 megabit per second internet connection

~3-4 gigabyte itunes hd movie file size.

Movies are 120 minutes give or take 30 minutes

60 seconds in a minute. 60 minutes in an hour.

Best case scenario would be a 3GB sized HD Movie with 2 mbps internet connection. Worst case would be 4GB sized HD movie with 1 mbps internet connection. We'll assume 150 minute movie for best case and 90 minute movie for worst case.

IN the worst case you need an internet connection of 4GB/90 minutes in order for the streaming to start asap. Best case you need 3GB/150 minutes.

4Gigabytes is 32 gigabits which is 32000 megabits. 90 minutes is 5400 seconds. 32000/5400=~6mbps connection. (connection needed for immediate streaming of worst case hd movie.)

3Gigabytes is 24 gigabits which is 24000megabits. 150 minutes is 9000 seconds. 24000/9000=~2.67mbps connection. ((connection needed for immediate streaming of best case hd movie.)

A 2mbps connection will do the worst case movie in 16000 seconds in nearly 4.5 hrs. Since that movie is 90 minutes you're going to have wait 3 hrs.

For a 1mbps connection for the same movie it obviously take twice as long or 9 hrs. And you're going to wait 7.5 hrs before you can start watching it.

For best case case movie and a 2mbps connection you're looking at 12000 seconds or 200 minutes or 3 hrs 20 minutes. Best case movie is 150 minutes so the wait would only be 50 minutes.

For a 1mbps and best case hd movie you're looking at 24000 seconds or 400 minutes. Wait would be 250 minutes or 4 hrs 10 minutes.

Did this fast so doublecheck and forgive errors.

I would say you could expect similar download times as you get with iTunes.
