Hi there

I‘m on a new iPad Pro with iPad OS installed.

And I‘m curious how I can download mp4 videos from sites to my iPad drive.

On mac OS it‘s easy to right-click and save or sometimes do it with extensions to rip videos. I can also do this easily on my Samsung Galaxy S10 by long press on a video and download it.

But doing so on the iPad in Safari, Firefox or Chrome doesn‘t work.

Anyone know or do I need extensions for that? Does it even exist for the iPad and iPad OS?

You can use Shortcuts and the Media Grabber shortcut (among others). You will have to allow untrusted Shortcuts in settings for that one.

Would it be possible to step by step explain how to set it up? I‘m so new to iPadOS and Shortcuts and can‘t find Media Grabber.

I‘d appreciate, thanks!

Go to Settings -> Shortcuts and untrusted shortcuts

Tap this link
scroll to the bottom and select install untrusted shortcut.

Now go visit YouTube.com or whatever, select a video then open the share sheet. Bingo.

When in settings and in Shortcuts there‘s nowhere “untrusted shortcuts“. There‘s only:

Language
iCloud Sync
Sync Shortcut Order
Legal Notices

What am I missing?

This is on latest iPadOS 13.1

No idea why you don't see that setting. You just try moving on the next step. I just found Media Grabber is currently broken (it relies on a 3rd party site that seems to be down/gone)

This one appears to work for YouTube and you can do web searches for shortcuts for other sites

Damn I googled this and I see screenshots in iOS that have the „untrusted shortcuts“ switch. But it‘s not available here on my iPad Shortcuts settings. WTF?

And I can‘t download from your link because I get a message then that I cant install it since I don’t have untrusted shortcuts allowed in my settings.

But how can I enable if there‘s no such switch???

It won't give you that option until you run a shortcut first. You'll want to create a quick dummy shortcut, run it, then go into your settings.

I got that other part to work but unfortunately these shortcuts Itself don‘t really work.

Is there really no browser or extension that can download videos?

I can’t believe you can’t do this on iOS but on Android you can just long press on a embedded mp4 video and download it.

Any other ideas?

This is my recommendation. Go sign up for the TestFlight beta for ISH. Install that and via its command line install YouTube-DL. I think the syntax is “apk get youtube-dL. Copy the URL for the vide you want, and in ISH type youtube-dL <pasted link>. You will see the progress of the download. You can then get to the ISH file store via FIles and find the file, and copy it to wherever you want. I think by default the downloads go the Root folder in ISH.

The good thing about ISH is it pretty much downloads videos from any web source.

I mentioned it above. Most of these types of shortcuts rely on a 3rd party web service and it appears one that Media Grabber relies on has been taken down. There may be an updated version and, even if not, there are many other similar shortcuts. You can use your favorite search engine to look for "iOS Shortcuts Video Downloader" or do some research on the /r/shortcuts subreddit and I'm sure you'll find something that fits your needs. Sorry I can't point you to one in particular.

This is a good suggestion if you're a bit more technically inclined. ISH is great fun to play with and YouTube-dL is very actively developed.

I am bad at it hence asking you if you can do it. Can you modify an existing shortcut with an another third party video grabbing tool for YouTube ? I can give you the shortcut and the video grabbing tool I want to be used in the shorcut !

I wouldn't, sorry. These can be very complex shortcuts. Afraid you'll have to do a bit of research. I'm sure you'll find something on /r/shortcuts.

The ISH solution is the least fiddly. It is a couple of quick command lines and the youtube-dl program works well.

All of the 3rd party video download shortcuts I have tried the sites don't seem to last long the sites go away.
