I started downloading a trailer on iTunes at my College, then my Calculus professor showed up. So I closed my MBP, and it went into sleep mode.

After class, I opened the book back up to notice that the download had finished!

Is it possible that it downloaded this while it was asleep?

That would be useful during our finals. I could get Portal for steam using the schools internet while taking my tests. ;)

if you really want to download stuff with your laptop closed, check out InsomniaX

    http://insomniax.en.softonic.com/mac

it allows your mac to run with the lid closed. Just be careful of heat, if you decide to put it in a bag or something
