    Hi All-

I'm running Mavs right now and plan to jump into El Capitan. Do I have to download Yosemite 1st since 10.11 is actually an update to 10.10?

    Thanks-

    Later, Rhobes

There is no hard "do this first" path to 10.11. You can go directly from Mavericks to El Capitan with minimal difficulties. That being said, do your due diligence and make sure that all your patches/firmware upgrades are up to date prior to your installation. It will make for a smoother transition if you do!

Make sure you have a good complete backup before any OS install. If you have not previously downloaded Yosemite then you can not download it from the App Store. Apple removed Yosemite when El Capitan was released.

Thanks for the reminder, I plan to clean-up everything then make a final backup on Time Machine-

    OP:

I would suggest creating a fully-bootable cloned backup using either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, instead of using TM.

It will make it much easier to "get back to where you once belonged" if your upgrade to 10.11 doesn't go as planned...!
