On my Windows laptop, I use Internet Download Manager which has an add-on that integrates with Firefox. It allows me to download YouTube videos with any quality that I want:

Is there something similar on Mac? How can I download YouTube videos on Mac?

also interested in this,

at the moment i'm using VLC Player...
this might look very convoluted with lots of steps, but it's actually still pretty fast and only a matter of seconds

1. copy YT video link into clipboard
2. open VLC
3. CMD+N (open new file inside VLC)
4. CMD+V (paste link from clipboard)
5. CMD+I (get file info)
6. double click shown URL and CMD+C that to copy to clipboard
7. CMD+V this URL into your web browser
8. right click and download file as...

I'm actually quite fine with this approach, as it isn't actually not that much of a hassle (despite looking like it in this text form),
only downside is that it just seems to max out at 720p for me

I use youtube-DL. It’s a commanding tool, installed with python or homebrew.
if you are not scared using the commandocentrum it’s the best tool ever!

I've been extremely happy with the standalone app 4K Video Downloader for a few years now.

www.4kdownload.com

You can download entire channels or playlists by simply copying/pasting the URL of the channel/playlist in the app. Lots of other options too.

Does Downie integrate with Firefox like IDM?

I was hoping I could find a free tool.

I used to use VLC for downloading, but it would periodically stop functioning due to changes made by YT, then need to catchup.

No need for an app:

Free tool for mac: https://www.shutterencoder.com/en/
Can download from 'protected' sites and can "fold out" into many instances
in order to run several (slow) down loads in parallel.
Requires JAVA
;JOOP!
