Hi Guys,

I've been using my new MBP for about a week and been pretty content with everything about my purchase less the trackpad! Uh oh!, yes you heard The Trackpad! I have a 2017 MBP 15" with the giganteous trackpad and it's just been a struggle, it is starting to bother me so much that I'm thinking of getting a mouse or make this new thread for help.

So, this is what happens:

I come from a 2012 11" small MacBook Air and the trackpad has always felt superb. When I got this new 2017 MBP i noticed a major bothering when I use drag & drop an item. It is so hard for me to drag & drop a file, I don't know how to explain it. The force I have to apply seems so strong. I use the trackpad very lightly , I am petite, female with small hands. I'm used to drag & drop without applying force to the trackpad.

For drag and drop in my Air I used to click and hold the trackpad with my right hand thumb while my index and middle fingers where free to move/control the direction where I was placing the file and when I finished I would just pull up the thumb from the pad. Here the force I have to apply is too strong. I can't comfortably drag & drop a file.

I suppose is a trackpad/accesibility setting, and it is all a setting that I have not set up right or that I do not know to set up. I like to touch and use my trackpad with lightly as possible touches. I have a very light hand, and do not like to apply/use force when using the trackpad. This only bothers me in the Drag & Drop. I never used a Force touch Mac before. I am playing with the settings but so far I have not found the root of the problem.

I also have BetterTouch Tool and if needed you guys could tell me how to use it to fix my trackpad. But I'm sure it is something in basic settings or something.

Please guys try to also post your settings for light hand, people that do not like to click or apply any force at all. Just use it almost like a smartphone touchscreen.

Thanks, I'll keep playing with the settings. It is in the drag & drop that I'm bothered.

It shouldn't require that much force to 'click'. There's three functions, tapping, clicking, and force-click. Clicking requires such little force I would find it hard to believe anyone would struggle with this, so there could be something wrong with your computer. Force clicking requires a little more force but this isn't used for drag and drop.

Do you feel the little haptic vibration when you click it? If you don't there could be something wrong, which is causing you to press it much firmer than you should be. Or maybe BTT is interfering with something. Maybe give Apple a quick call and see what they suggest.

Hey Mac, this seems pretty dumb but I disabled Force touch and tried it first time without it and it works perfectly now! It seems that everytime I drag & drop I did triggered Always almost the force touch where it previewed a file. Now it is working as I used to know the Apple Trackpads. Sorry! I was a force touch newbie, I can already tell you I just don't like it!!

I'll keep it disabled, but is there anyway for me to drag & drop normally without almost always accidentally triggering it? (I wanted to use force touch and the new trackpad features) What other setting can it be? Also... I set my cursor to scroll faster, you know the arrow/pointer to move faster which I like it. Is there any other way for me to "feel the drag move faster as well??"

If you prefer using light touch only like a touch screen device, there is a setting in track pad accessibility that allows a "left click" and drag with three fingers.

No actual click involved, just touch three fingers and begin dragging whatever your cursor is on. Works great, and here the ginormous pad comes into its own.

You might know about this already, but I figured I would mention it.

It isn't just you. I recently started using a 2015 15" MBP for work (also has force touch trackpad) coming from a 2013 MBA and I've noticed the same thing. It is significantly harder to do the drag and drop operation and maintain the item in a drag state without accidentally letting go (if that makes sense). I really like the force touch trackpad for everything else but for drag and drop it is not as good as the traditional trackpad.

One thing you can try is going into accessibility and enabling 3 finger drag. If you also have tap to click turned on (in trackpad settings) you can use a three finger tap to drag windows, files etc. It isn't quite as reliable as just click dragging but it's another option to consider.
