It was probably The Beatles. Everyone loves them, so most people heard about it, bought some songs, then bought some more other songs. Many of their songs are in the top charts on iTunes, and their albums are too.

Itsa Pirates life for me.

Wait! Aren't the record companies going to blame this sales trend on the pirates? After all, they blamed every other trend in sales on the pirates.

Agree 100 per cent. And I advise all of you to stay away from the East Coast of Africa. Arrrrrrr.

There CANNOT be that many people without a Beatles album that actually wants one. They are on sale everywhere, literally.

I don't get it. Who hasn't heard all the Beatles catalog years ago?
Young people. You know, the people who were born after the Beatles' heyday.

There are billions of them.

You do realize that humans continue to breed and that the world population continues to grow, yes? Or did your wristwatch stop in 1982, when your login handle KingCrimson namesake was at their peak and you refused to see beyond that moment?

You're not really stuck in 1982, are you?

Ugh...

Oh no, not this Beatle hoo-haw again.

I only know one person (out of 40 or 50 friends) who actually listen to that band. No one else listens. I think they have about the same number of people who like them that like Henry Mancini. On the other hand I know tons of people who love Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Genesis, etc. Flab Four are overrated, at best.

On a personal note, just hearing Beatle's music is depressing. And I'd rather be water-boarded than listen to it. I also don't like Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello.

Just because you don't know anyone who listens to them doesn't mean that they are overrated, or bad, or nobody is buying their stuff on iTunes.

I don't know anyone who actually listens to Genesis (and if I did, I certainly wouldn't admit it). Does that mean they are completely irrelevant? Nope. It means that there are people who have different taste in music than I do.

I personally don't listen to the Beatles, but my parents certainly jumped on board and downloaded everything that was available. My mom is a technophobe and found it much easier to just download everything onto her iPad than to dig out the old CD's and rip them into iTunes. I imagine there are hundreds of thousands just like her. I mean, somebody was buying them.

Not too surprising

I think a large segment of older music buyers viewed online music downloads as a fad or as being just for kids. The Beatles debut legitimized online music to those people, and now they're updating and filling out their collections in this new medium.

Bring on the future!

Eye opener

I also noticed since the Beatles were released on iTunes....quite a few older artists albums appeared on the store within a couple of weeks

I think it proved to some of the older bands who prohaps still didn't see a market in buying digital music that they could sell a lot of units.

I think it was a good thing the Beatle launch was a late entry.

This is why Apple made a big deal of the news on the home page....they knew that after this more and more bands from past and present would see the potential of iTunes and that music sales can rise....in a digital form
:apple:

Demise of Limewire, not Beatles

I think it makes a lot more sense that Limewire got shut down in October and people started buying more music, which would also account for the sustained buying trend.
