So I'm planning to buy an iphone 4s for my friend so he can use it on t-mobile.

Upon looking on ebay, the verizon ones seem to be selling at a cheaper rate then GSM version.

Is there any disadvantages to buying an unlocked verizon iphone vs an unlocked gsm iphone?

thanks

You can't use a Verizon 4S on T-Mobile. It's only unlocked for international use. That's why they're going for less than the GSM ones.

I believe he is correct.

Now, the iPhone 5s & 5c are completely unlocked and usable on t-mobile. I believe the only place that wouldn't activate it is sprint.

Agreed. Get him an unlocked GSM IPhone (with AWS preferable) or Verizon 5S.

I believe iPhone 4S still did not have a universal baseband RF transceiver. So it will not work with T-Mobile's AWS for example.

The 4S doesn't have any LTE support at all, as far as I recall. And, as mentioned before, the Verizon version, even when unlocked, doesn't support any US GSM providers at all (like T-Mobile or AT&T).

You're right. I mixed up the wrong iPhone models.
