Okay, so I went to the Apple Store last night at Macarthur Center in Norfolk. Great mall, great Apple Store.

But, am I wrong in thinking that at the very least Apple should have a dress code for these guys? They look awful. At least jeans and a nice Apple logo button down shirt or something. I saw dudes straight from the grunge scene in Seattle in the late 80's working there.

    Simply awful.

Most are sandal wearing and desheveled looking but what can you expect when the CEO dresses like a bum as well?

Yeah, I've dealt with some scruffy looking dudes at times. The kind that have bad breath and don't wear deodarant. They need to have some standard with regards to dress, facial hair, etc.

I agree they dress poorly and Apple has a relaxed dress code but what does clothing have to do with someone's technical ability, true looks can make or break you but then again look at all the CEO's wearing $5,000.00 suites, but they steal, lie and cheat, so where is the balance.

Dress like a bumb but can do my job well or Steal everyone's money get paid 800% more then the avg employee and point fingers when things go wrong, there is no difference in my OP.

Its a retail store, in a tech field no less. As long as they know what they are doing and can solve problems/sell me stuff, I don't care what they look like.

For what they get paid, you're lucky they're wearing anything at all.

I do roadside assistance for the car insurance companies, mostly AAA. At all times, my car is cleaned and shiny and not muddy. I am always wearing clean jeans and a clean shirt, shaven, and even my safety vest is clean.

Why can't Apple stores have the same standards?

Does it matter? I couldn't care less how people dress. Find a hobby.

I think it goes back to the days when they first opened the stores and tried to create a young, hip and causal environment, where you can just go and hang out with no pressure to buy. I didn't want to dress people like sales people, i.e. Circuit City with polo shirts with the company logo and slacks. Part of Apple is selling an image.

Strange, both the apple stores I've been to they've worn polo shirts or tshirts, all wearing the same colour (cyan one place, orange the other) and black trousers. I've never seen one out of uniform, although I've been served by a few who've looked very scruffy and one who was very very arrogant.

But like it's been said, it's a retail store, you always get the strange people.

This thread has cheered me up no end.
As a Brit, I can't believe I have just read a debate on dress code by our friends across the pond...

PS - The apple store employees over here wear top hats and monocles...

Actually, just as an observation, was just in the Glasgow store at lunch time, and all staff have smart-ish iPad t-shirts on...

I really don't care how they dress but Apple ought to have minimum bathing standards.
