Technically it should be an instant right off because each car costs (according to TopGear) £5m to make.

Not quite, that's the development cost spread over the production run.

If they built more, then that figure would obviously fall.

That said, it was a completely mismanaged project that allowed costs to spiral out of control like that in the first place.

Update...

The four-wheel drive Veyron then aquaplaned and crashed nose first into a ditch by the side of the road, but hit a Vauxhall Astra Estate. There were no injuries reported in either car but a pregnant woman in the Astra was taken to St Peter's hospital in Chertsey for precautionary reasons. The road was blocked, and the accident occurred in a short stretch of national speed limit on the road, which was very wet. Surrey Police report witnesses that saw the £800,000 Bugatti travelling at excessive speed, and have charged its driver with driving without due care and attention.
(For people outside the UK, "national limit" is 60mph)

why'd the driver get red.... i would have gotten blue. But ouch. Is it totalled or can it be fixed. It doesn't look that bad considering the speed he was going at.

He was probably looking for a gas station. Those cars empty their tank in less than 30 minutes with "aggressive" driving. I still want to drive one though...

Doesn't look beyond economical repair does it. Especially when you're potentially writing off the best part of a million quid.

Since the car is an instant classic/super-rare collector's item, as long as it's humanly possible to rebuild somebody will probably be willing to pay for it to be done.

If I was in the car that got hit, I'd snatch up any loose bits laying around and ebay 'em. :p

Also this cost is over the Veyron project. Economies of scale will reduce the project's overall cost, but given the level of innovation in the Veyron and how much VW will have learnt from it, the long term payback for them will likely easily make up for it. It's a bit like factory team investment in Formula 1.

Yeah definitely. There were so many times after they bough Bugatti that there were rumours of terminating the project. Even when they had the prototype cars running and they were spinning off the tracks people were saying they'd never do it. Now it stands as a masterpiece of engineering - or "Concord moment"!

Two thirds of it look fine, including the engine. If there's no chassis damage it might not even touch half of the price to repair it. Didn't they repair Naseem Hahmed's Mercedes SLR after his mad moment? That was in much worse shape!

I'd take Jay Leno's Banks modified Tank Car if I was going for something with a few horsepower and sufficient torque for the street.

Although the engine and turbos can easily produce 1600 horsepower and 3000 lb,ft. of torque, anything above 1200 horsepower produced violent wheel spin, and getting any readings was impossible. The tie-down straps holding the car on the dyno didn't like it. We eventually softened the tune-up a little to make it a bit more street friendly.

Neither not working. Tried in both Safari and FireFox. This is what I get:

The Gale Banks site is working, however your DNS server may not be giving it to you -- sort of strange though since it works on both of those for me.

Pfffff, that will buff out easily!

Accidents happen, experienced driver or not. I run group 2 at Summit Point and even some of us experienced racers slip up sometimes.... This past October a guy wrecked his brand new Elise that had barely been broken in.

Some sad sights in there.

Ok, this one is kinda funny
