MBA owners, which service do you prefer? Dropbox or Google Drive? Any real differences in usage on a Mac? Thanks!

Dropbox seemed very expensive to me, and I've got issues with anything that is Google or Microsoft, so I went with SugarSync (after using iDisk for years). I get more than 5GB free (there are things you can do to get even more free space) and have been quite happy with it.

I use several

I use Dropbox for files that relate to my teaching at the university and personal stuff. I also have Skydrive that I mainly use to park business files that I need occasionally and Box that gave me 25GB for free. Dropbox and Box are both super reliable. Skydrive I only use via web log-in so I have not given it a fair shake.

If you are going to pay for massive storage, take a look at www.livedrive.com for what I consider to be a good deal. I am moving more and more stuff to that service.

If docs contain anything really private, I wouldn't trust ANY of the public
storage companies. So, only non critical things go to the cloud.

Dropbox is better than Google? How about this:

Dropbox confirms data leak: http://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/Dropbox-confirms-data-leak-1657230.html

There wasn't a DATA leak, a Dropbox employee got his account hacked and a list of usernames and their email addresses were stolen ONLY. And that's why they were spammed. What caught people's attention was, people who had created spam catchall addresses for Dropbox only were getting spam - I was on the Dropbox forums when that started.

But you have an EXCELLENT point... How can anyone trust anything when you're putting your data on someone else's computer. Even if it's the big three - Apple, Yahoo, Google.... (Amazon probably should be counted in that I guess)... your data is never safe.

Dropbox, ofc.

I try to by as google-free as possible. No search, no mail, no maps,no drive, no calendar, no docs, etc.

Google is EVIL!

I use Box because I got 50 gb of free storage during a promotion.

Me too. I've seen them offer this a few times, so it's something to keep a casual eye out for. (For me, it was signing up for an account with an Android phone.) I don't use it a lot, but it's nice to know that I've got a nice chunk of space if I need it.

I hadn't tried dropbox until now and have been using google drive , which is pretty good.
You can easily access your files from a browser and share them with anyone.
I just installed dropbox too and put the folder into google drive, that way I have 2 synchronised backups of my important files ;)

Dropbox for me too.

- LAN Sync is a must for me (Google Drive doesn't have it)
- Flawless
- I currently have 15Gb of storage for free (referrals, dropquest, camera upload, ...)
- Google Drive offers office files editing on the web but it is limited to G.Drive files so it's pointless for me as my files are native Word or Excel
- Dropbox Web interface is way better IMO
- Sharing is simplier
- Been a long time Dropbox fan
- Partial sync (selected folder) (Google Drive has it too)
- Way more popular API (Lot of my iOS apps use Dropbox)
- Dropbox Mobile App is better than Google's ones

On the minus side, it is pricier than Google Drive but I'm still having enough free space without paying. However, if needed, I'll upgrade to Pro 100Gb ($99 a year = $8 a month compared to Google's $5 a month).

I also briefly tried Box.net (I have the free 50Gb) and Skydrive (Free 25Gb) and even subscribed to Sugarsync about 3 years ago but Dropbox beats them all IMO.

Confused

I find that Dropbox works well for pictures.. The instant upload comes in handy when I'm out snapping pics on my iPhone, it uploads quickly and I can delete it to save space on my phone. Dropbox doesn't resize your photo uploads like google does

I use google drive for everything else. Since its built into my email account I can take advantages of all the other benefits of gmail. I find that this system works well for me

I thought if you deleted the photo on your phone it would also delete it from dropbox?

The thing I don't like about Google Drive is that when I want to share files with a friend I have to go on to the google drive website and manually send it through there.

With Dropbox I just have the folder that I want to share with my brother on his computer and I just drop files into that folder. I don't need to open up a web browser or anything and the interface is so simple.

Didn't vote because there's no choice for Both.

They are just different enough, to cause me to use both. Also I am not one to put all my data in one place other than my NAS at home.

I have used both with my macbook air and my galaxy nexus phone.

Dropbox works better than google drive even on the galaxy nexus...

I haven't taken the time to figure out exactly what the issues are but in my experience Google Drive is just not user friendly. And synching doesn't occur as seamlessly as with Dropbox.

I strongly prefer Dropbox.

I've used all three mentioned and always end up back to skydrive.

Google drive uses too many resources, had frequent connectivity issues and didn't always play nice with office file formats.

Dropbox is nice, but the size is too limiting.

Skydrive gives me 25 gigs free and allows me to edit and create in native ms applications which prevents file conversion errors.

My only concern is MS changes their mind all the time. It was Live Mesh, now Skydrive. Started with 25 gigs now 7.

The thing I don't like about Google Drive is that when I want to share files with a friend I have to go on to the google drive website and manually send it through there.

In my experience Drive, Dropbox, and Skydrive all require you to go online to their web interface to set the sharing permissions. So once you set the permissions on a folder anything you drop in it via computer, tablet or mobile device inherits those permissions.
