Lets say in theory you drop your iphone. As a result if this the phone no longer operates properly. The only good thing is the case you have on stops there being any physical signs of damage. Is there a way for someone to tell that the phone has been dropped?

No, but if it didn't sustain any physical damage then it's possible they'll be able to fix it for you. Take it in and say it doesn't work, you aren't sure why.

I would have thought it unlikely that a drop could break the phone without showing any external signs of damage. Are you really talking 'in theory' or has this happened in reality?

    It has happened.

It genuinely isn't my phone but the problem is that the user of the phone cannot be heard now during calls. Everything else on it works fine.

Well then your friend might be lucky. Send it back to Apple and see what they say...
