Meh. I've still managed to achieve to hairlines scratches in on my screen, regardless of it being sapphire. They feel deep though so I must have hit something really hard.
Wow, you're the first one to say he has scratched the sapphire screen. I've not had a chance but I'll be getting a screen protector.

The sapphire display doesn't seem to be quite a strong as Apple would like. I've managed to put two hairlines scratches in mine, that you can feel with your nail. I thought sapphire was meant to be unscratchable? I must have hit it against something pretty hard...

Yes... you must have hit it against other Sapphire or Diamond. Or perhaps those hairline fractures were impact from dropping or smashing (but it somehow managed to stay intact other than that damage). Do you wear diamond jewelry? Or has someone who does fondled your watch?

I would contact Apple though as they may be interested in getting/studying your unit and may give you a free replacement if that is the case.

If you are still going to get a screen protector you might as well just get a Sports model and save yourself the $200+ cause then you're really paying $200 for just the shine on the bezel.

Gosh. I really haven't been anywhere near anymore diamond or sapphire, nor do I wear any other jewellery. I really hadn't thought much of it, but I was disappointed that I'd managed to scratch it and thought that was odd. Maybe I'll take it in to them when I can. I'll see if I can get a photo of it to show you guys and I'll add it to this post.

Edit: Just gotten off the phone to Apple (after having had chat support with them) they basically said it was considered cosmetic wear and so they wouldn't really replace it without a service charge. I tried to suggest that the screen probably shouldn't have become scratched so easily, he said I should take it into a Store to see if they could offer anything different after reviewing the case. I'll try that this weekend.

I have the sports model ;)

The screen protection is to enhance the scratch resistance

It might be in the anti-reflective coating.

Just about any watch company is going to charge you for a new sapphire, if you want to replace it.

Hi Gregintosh.
No, the protector covers the screen and body so the screen wouldn't touch the table.
Here is a picture, and yes, the protector is on the watch....

Who repairs screens for just $129, i have a local guy who did a 5c for 99, I'm not arguing with the point, I'm just curious who repairs out of warranty screens for $129?

Also does Apple+ have value if you consider that is protects you from water damage that DOES NOT break your screen? And that the Verizon $11 Mobile protection covers theft of the device?

isn't there a coating on top of the sapphire screen? That is probably what scratched.

Time to take out your garbage. And put the watch protector in there with it.

I keed, I keed.

No need for a watch protector!!! In my not so popular opinion. :)

Wear it for work fella.
It's in all its naked beauty the rest of the time.

I'd be concerned about dirt getting under the case and scratching the watch. I'd just wear the thing as it's meant to be worn. I helped a friend move furniture for 12 hours with it on the other day. No problems. Get Apple Care+ and don't worry about it, I say.

It's still very possible to scratch sapphire, it just takes a lot more work than with the sport model. You also have to remember that the FORCE in which you scratch it also makes a difference. If you just merely rubbed your sapphire screen against a concrete pillar, you might not scratch it, but smacking it into the pillar might well scratch it.

I haven't picked up any scratched on my SS Watch yet, and I've definitely had a few clumsy moments with it, because... human.

Don't really care for the look the screen protector or your band gives off. With that being said, I'm happy to hear you like it. I don't mean to offend, just that I don't see myself ever putting it on.

Not happened so far. Yours is an option obviously, but the nature of my work means it's just too likely to get ding. Don't do 'extended warranties', we have a consumer lawyer in the family who would disown us. They only possible benefit is accidental damage, and that's on most contents insurance theses days anyway. They are a scam and offer nothing the law in the UK doesn't already provide (5 years 'fit for purpose' guarantee). My record is a brand new fridge from Zanussi to replace the one that failed at 4 years and 17 days old :)

I normally don't do extended warranties, either, but watches are a bit different, because they get banged around quite a bit.

As far as dings, I expect my watches to get those, and they all have tons of them. It's nature of the beast. Of course, this has always been a thing that I never understood:

But the whole point of something being scratch resistant, is so your screen isn't physically scratched and you can't see scratches. Putting a coating on the sapphire seems like a complete oversight by Apple, because it scratches so much more easily than the sapphire underneath it. What's the point? It might be anti-reflection, but paying out for a sapphire screen seems pointless if they're just gonna do this.

Oh I totally agree. I just was pointing out the sapphire was not actually scratched just the coating....so it doesn't take a diamond.

As for you guys putting on and taking off your AW while walking through the terazzo floor part of the airport or while rock climbing at Yosemite, or the concrete part of the parking lot, perhaps you should wait until you get to a softer area.

As far as I see in this thread, I am the only one with a mishap that occurred at an airport ... And the band came unlatched allowing the watch to fall - I wasn't putting it on or taking it off.

Some watchmakers put AR coatings on both side of the sapphire crystal, and the top one does start scratching off.

If you put the screen face down on a table, does the screen touch the table at all? Also concrete tends not to be super even, so a 1mm gap might not save it from being hit especially if it goes down with some force.

It would probably protect the sides from getting scuffed up too badly though, but I feel like I would be annoyed more at having the protector than the value it provides.

I dropped mine the other day. Ceramic in both bathrooms, where I NEVER put on my AW. Carpet, pergo or linoleum everywhere else. I make it a point to put on my AW in carpeted areas, either my bedroom or the carpeted area of locker room at my gym. Mine simply bounced and I didn't bother to even look at it for damage because it was like falling on a firm pillow. And although I'm having a little fun at your expense, I do agree that at the prices Apple is charging, it would be nice if these things could go through a few drops on hard surfaces without shattering.

So did yours shatter also?

I can't imagine the dropping being such a big deal once your watch is on your hand. If you're outside you should have very little reason to take your watch off completely. That's unlike the phone where you're always taking it in and out of your pockets and using it without any strap.

When you're at home you could easily do it over the desk/table where your charger is, on carpeting, or even if you have hardwood floors it probably won't shatter. If you're a very clumsy person just sit down at a table to put it on.

I get that accidents will happen and that Apple should make this as durable as possible but I feel safer about my watch than I do my iPhone. If you screw it up once the odds of doing it again are probably slim unless you're really mega clumsy and not careful.

No mine is not damaged in any way. I mentioned the ceramic surfaces and other hard surfaces to give examples of places I would never put on or take off my Apple Watch but the only time I've ever dropped it was on one of the carpeted areas I mentioned above when I wasn't paying attention putting it on. BTW I have that somewhat tricky sport band. Sorry it wasn't clear.

Ouch. So this was an Apple band or a third party band? Of course Apple is fixing it under AppleCare but if it was an Apple band that came unlatched, I would think they wouldn't charge you even the most modest incident fee.

dropped my watch today, cracked the bottom left hand side of it. Still works and doesn't get in the way of the face but I'm bummed. I don't have AC on it how much is it to replace?

Apple Leather Loop band - you can see it in picture. Apple financially compensated me, but I used one of my 2 mishap incidents (which I am not happy about).
