I dropped my iPad 3 and dented one of the corners. The screen is fine and it still works normally. I checked on my applcare and it expires in three weeks... I can pay and have my iPad replaced for $49 but am wondering if its worth it. Do they even have iPad 3's to give out anymore? Is there any way I can leverage this to get a newer ipad?

Apple still sells iPad 3's so you'll get that and not a newer model. That only applies to a device that needs repair but parts are no longer available. It's totally up to you if you want to spend the $49.

Keep it and save your money.
