Cable or DSL quality is *very* location dependent. You could have great DSL, and your buddy, a few blocks away, has constant drops. Same with cable. If somebody says "DSL is better" or "Cable is better" that's true for them, but meaningless for you because your location and wiring is different.

Just get whatever's available and cheapest, and don't sign any long term contract. And if you get bad service, switch, and thank god for competition.
 
I have iPrimus HomeJet ADSL (I'm in Australia). I pay (well, my family does) AUD$90 per month for 512kbs downstream and 128kbs upstream. It's reliable, and we have been with Primus since the days we had dialup. Unfortunently, it only has a 4GB download limit.

The next step up would a be a 1.5mbs downstream and 256kbs upstream ADSL connection, with a 5Gb download limit, for AUD$150.

Now, I can't be bothered running this through a currency converter, so could someone work out what this is is USD$?
