Just had to get in here and mention, the 970's are in production now, the motherboards are in production, i would guess the machine is in production also. WWDC will talk about panther and the machine to run panther( the 970 ) i will guess that steve will not only show off his new baby but announce a very close date of shipping maybe as short as a couple of weeks. Yes a dual 1.42 is a nice machine but if a 1.4 single 970 matches or exceeds this then waiting for the next best thing will have big rewards. Have been thinking of upgrading my 733 but a 970 at 1.4 or better will be hard to pass up.

I'd suggest that you use caution when making such absolute statements as these. There is no evidence (other than rumors) that the 970 is in production (in any kind of volume), or that the motherboards are in production. Rumors must always be taken with a proverbial grain of salt.

That said, I'd tend to agree that waiting, if possible, is a wiser course of action at this point. The only reason I can see to buy a new Power Mac at this point is if having the capability represented there is mission critical over the next couple of months.

I think that there are a lot of people who would disagree with saying that the G4 was never loved. Personally, I also find this analogy mildly offensive. All children should be loved...

clarification about my speeds:

dual 1.42 powermac with superdrive A05 (pioneer) using iTunes encoding mp3 in 192 kbit and AAC in 128 kbit I encode 30X in Mp3 and 22X in AAC. These speeds are the fastest I get - and the avarege is about 20-25 when encoding mp3 and 15-20 when encoding AAC.

cheers :)

That sounds about right as my Dual/GHz/DDR get's nearly exactly the same speeds except with 320kb/s MP3s. Which is expected since it take less processing power to rip at 320kb/s.

Thanks! I'm ordering mine in just under two weeks.
