Ah, you're quite right.. I was going by the original poster's indication that it was a Quicksilver.

and this dual 833 mhz G4 Quicksilver, both running OS 9.2. I'm not kidding, that 833 G4 is almost as loud as a vacuum cleaner!!

Aha! That's why I was thinking MDD. There were two Quicksilver models with a single 867 G4, the first revision of the QS and the education model. Good catch, Rob! So the firmware update will work.

EDIT: That would also explain why it is as loud as a vacuum cleaner. 😎

Sorry if this is a little belated. But if you're still looking to do something about the noise, I have a few tips. I've just completed the noise mod on a Dual 867MHz, and brought down its temperature to under 53 degrees celsius. This is harder than you'd imagine since I live near the equator.

The main battle is against the two fans within the PSU, of which you NEED to replace to get rid of the headache-inducing whine, and airflow around the top fins of the alu heatsink. If not enough air passes through this particular zone, you risk destroying one of the two CPUs. Incidentally this is also the Archilles' heel of the MDD design.

The biggest noise culprit are the 120 mm vent fans and the power supply fan. You can check out 7volts.com for ways to add a rheostat to limit the amount of voltage that drives the fans.

Thanks for your suggestions 🙂 Would try it if it was my machine. Over the past 2 weeks I have tried arguing with the agency to get that thing repaired. No way, they want to wait until it burns down. The woman who uses it still doesn't want to take the machine out of the box, I've explained to her 3 times that it just gets worse that way, but according to her: "no, it's quieter inside of the box" I think the noise actually got worse since I started working there. I've given up... but there was a rather simple sollution for me, I just bring along my headphones and listen to music while working. 😀
